Hi All,
I found this unusual shaped item - about 5" down in 'unused' farm land.
Very heavy - probably cast iron - 7" high, 6" wide, about 1/4" thick - A deffinate lip or edge or the straight side.
Has the letters 'SON' '.' 'NEWAR' and part of another letter probably making the place name of 'NEWARK' around the curved edge and the letters 'NT' at an angle to the straight edge, probably the end of the word 'TRENT' or 'DERWENT'.
Newark, Trent and Derwent are all locally used place names - the 'Son' could be part of '& Son' which may connect it to a Brewery (Newark-onTrent had many family run breweries many years ago) - We're quite a few miles from any railway line so I think a Railway connection isn't likeley.
Here are the pics - (including crude Brass-rubbing highlighting the letters):
Any help identifying it will be most welcome - thanks.
