Looking at my todays finds post you can see why I was happy to put the metal detector aside for a hunt and concentrate on sifting. These are some of the other keepers besides the 4 eagle buttons.

The first pic shows some of the suspender clips and a couple of buckles. Am I correct that the oval object on the top right is some sort of buckle? Anyone come across one before and can give me info? The buckle on the top left I could use some info also. If I look closely with a magnifying glass at it there is some sort of scroll design on it and possibly some words or numbers but cannot tell.

The ornate suspender clasp in the middle left has engraved on the back "KLEINERTS" and it is in cursive writing. Also on the clasp on the bottom right has the same name except in block letters. ANyone have any info on this company, like when they were in business?

The next pic shows some more items like buttons or fasteners. The middle and bottom right ones have me puzzled and I would appreciate any input as to what exactly these are. Some of you might hav ecome across them. The next pic shows the backs to these items for better identification hopefully.

The last pic shows three items. The first item I have no idea on but stamped on it is "Patented May 17 1898" I beleive it is 1898 but cannot verify unless I can come up with a better cleaning method. Like I said in the other post it seems as if there was a fire and all these items were burned. Some are evne badly rusted. The middle item in this pic is what I believe to be an attachment for a ribbon or medal. I wonder if through sifting I can find more parts to verify this. If others know that I am correct, please let me know. The last item shows a gear or something. At first I was thinking a spur, but I could be correct on eather gear or spur.

Take a look at the pics and please chime in with all your input on what these items are.

Thanks and HH

forgot to mention that while my son was searching through the sifted items he found two coins that are badly corroded and again, possibly burned. The one was an IH that I cannot quite make out the date and the other was a wheatie from 1910. I told him I since he spotted the coins in the sifter that he can keep them and any other coins we found but I keep the buttons! Unfortunately no more coins that day but just to give you an idea of the size of the area we sifted, the hole was roughly 3 feet in diameter and about 1 foot deep. The soild was dark brown/black at the surface and started to get lighter brown as we got deeper. Does this mean anything to anyone on what the two layers represent?

nice batch of old buckles --- the design of some of them make me think of buckles early 1800's time frame -- yes the darker dirt is due to the ash from the fire (home burned down or a old trash burn pit area --folks tend to use the same dump spot for many years ( hey the gramps dumped trash there --so dad did too and the grandsons -- its a "family learned habit" --the trash goes here to be burnt )--once you get below that burnt dirt you get to earlier time frame -- likely the older early 1800 --late 1700 era buckles came from deeper dirt --there might have been a prior older place on the site and it might have been rebuilt on -- which is very common cuz hey a good spot them is ofyen still a good spot now plus it had already had been cleared of trees and all that (which was a lot of work) --often an old wore out wooden building was simply burnt down to remove it --(much easier that trying to break it down bit by bit esp if the woods rotted and useless --the iron nails and fixture items survive thru the fire and often could be reused --that way they could use fresh lumber and rebuild on the same spot --if your hitting nails --think an old home ---no nails think a trash pit --also size has alot to do with it how big is the "dark" earth area? -- a burn pit would be smaller , a house much bigger--hopefully you can figger out which one it is -- but if its a burn pit there was a old house nearby so find it too--- Ivan

Probably a small fire pit were trash was burned. Some of the items look like they have been exposed to heat. Very nice finds!!

I found something on the middle right hand side item in the second and third pic. It seems to be some sort of clothing fastener and on the second pic what looks like script writing says "Washburne" and cleaning the back a little with sandpaper I see "Washburne" then on the lever says "Pat'd" and there are two dates, one is Mar 27 and I see a 4 next to that date and the other date is Feb 4 and what could be a 3 next to that. Tried to do a patent search for Washburne and there are only 38 patents for this inventor and none of them have those dates or look like that item. Any ideas?

Thanks
