Not long ago at a local relic meeting , I said to myself maybe it's time to look into a Pulse Induction type machine ,caouse a few of the guys with those type mds keep digging nicer ,deeper relics than me. Most all sites in my area have been hunted HARD through the years and many good ones are so mineralized that most detectors wont work well at all. ? Has any one put head to head the Whites TDI compared to say the Minelab 4800 [other than price] ,the ones digging the best relics one uses the 4800 & the others a TDI type & their finds seem to mirror the others . I know alot goes in to it / like knowing your machine but the whites seem's to be a better deal on $price alone .I know this is the Minelab site ,so some may be biased so I may ask the same on the Whites sub forum . Thanks ....

Well, if having the most acronyms is any indication of how good a detector is, you might want to go with the Minelab. ;)
I'll stick with the TDI, even though I haven't done any head to head with any other brand. Quite frankly, White's customer service locked me in long, long ago, and if I miss a target or two because I refuse to hop from detector to detector, so be it. I know my White's detectors are rock solid and backed up by rock solid customer service. Another thing - you don't see White's jacking up the prices on their detectors because of a gold rush in Africa, either.

As a Minelab GPX 4000, and 5000 owner, and a hunter that has a few hundred hours on the TDI - these machines cannot be compared. The Minelab GPX is THE Mack Daddy - period. The TDI is, "the poor man's Minelab." If you can't afford the Minelab, buy the TDI. Good luck!

whites are known to "love iron" --minelabs are known to do well in hard mineral areas ...

Listen to Terry. You get what you pay for.

This coming from Terry, who is unaware that the TDI is able to eliminate, selectively, high and low conductors. I'm not saying the TDI can match a Minelab PI Gold detector's ability (I have never tried one,) but beware of taking advice from Terry who tends to view his detector advice with blinders and doesn't give any evidence that he might be well versed on using the TDI!!

any buddy who has two minelabs that coast thousands of dollars but uses a lobo super tract for gold needs there head examined ...I don't think i would take advice from him..

I THANK EVERYONE FOR THEIR REPLY'S . At this point ? if I were to get a PI type machine it likely would be the Whites. WHY? =Info from t net ,$ I have a wife and a 5 yr old, & the guy's I spoke of in my op usually hunt together. [Sorry Terry but I got some so so advice from you in the past, Thanks for your time tho.]

Liftloop, you need to understand that the Lobo Super Track is a great detector and while not as deep as the PI's it still finds pinhead sized gold with ease. An it is way lighter to use.

sandiest of man

give me a break I don't think 17.8 khz is going to compare to any 50 to 70 khz vlf gold detector, let a lone a pulse induct set at the khz needed to go deep and find tiny of low conducting metal sure it mite find gold at the beach but that's about all
It says right in your caption
time is the only thing you don't get back so why would swing a 17 .8 khz when you have two top of the line detector any ways
i don't see it
he could be doing head too head test with thees mine labs that should take up some of his time I would love to see a supper trac fallow a say a gold bug pro around and say
hay you mist one and it's just a speck
So were is this
High production T.V star at thees days
I'm talking about Mr Soloman

I must say I'm not too jazzed with characterizing the TDI as the "poor man's Minelab".
I didn't purchase the TDI because I can't afford the Minelab. In fact, due to a review by a very trusted friend, I very nearly did by the VTX 3030.
While price is always a consideration (I hate wasting money), the deciding factors for me were: 1. White's customer service and 2. Eric Foster, the "father" of PI machines was on the design team. Seems a pretty good pedigree to me.
So, while I may be secure in my choice, I don't think statements like the above are particularly helpful to the first time buyer and are more effective at raising the ire of brand loyal operators. And I for one don't like seeing threads degenerate into internet wars.
