I was checking out some pictures posted by Doc from GoldHog in the main prospecting forum (Spooky Gold) and when I saw the picture of all the lead I had a thought that we could use more pictures of lead removed from streams. lakes and rivers by dredgers to strengthen our point that dredging is GOOD for these areas.

So here is the plan. Every time you find lead or mercury while dredging, take a picture of it and post it here. I know it's kind of late in the season to start a project like this but if every one contributes over the next year we could really show the public and the greenies what our efforts are doing to help clean the waterways. I don't know if it will help but it doesn't hurt to at least try.

Along with your picture(s) if possible also list the weight of the lead/mercury removed and we can keep a running total. Also what area it came from (unless you're"midnight" mining then keep that info under your hat or dive hood)

The worst thing we can do is nothing. I think it's a good idea. If i had pictures of all the lead and glass i've taken from swimming holes with my dredge, it would be impressive.
Maybey a new section just for such a thing. Metal detecting, artisinal mining, heck, everything we do here helps remove other peoples junk/trash from the environment.
We need more good press and some sort of real representation.

here is what i have pulled out in about 3 months just sluicing. its from clear creek colorado. i also pulled a bucket out of the stream. its got material in it so i figured id pan it out and see whats in it.

Been done 100s a times before-THERE ARE NONE SO BLIND AS THOSE THAT REFUSE TO SEE. We have hauled 1,000s a lbs a junk to meetings with the bureauratz, displayed over a TON of garbage off the chili bar river bottom-sold back many 100s a pounds of mercury back to the state for proper reclaimation and all a joke as they DON'T GIVE A FLYING FURRY CRAPPOLA ABOUT ANY TRUTHS, just the green agenda-John

No offense but I think this isn't such a good idea. It's fine to make the point that dredge prospectors clean up the junk in the waterways but showing dredgers and a pile of junk is really bad PR.

Show the miner next to a pristine mountain stream and then write about all the junk they cleared out to get it that way but please never show a miner standing next to a junk pile.

Folks that sell toilets don't show how well the brown floater goes down. The trash man doesn't brag with pictures of the trash they have piled up. Feminine products... well I think you get the idea.

If you are trying to show how good you are show good stuff that results, not the bad stuff that is now history. Leave the junk pile out. Pictures are powerful stuff, be careful how you use them. It could come back to bite you.

Well then we really REALLY need to put our heads together to figure out how to fight the idiots in a way that's going to do some good. We don't have their money resources to work with so we have to come up with something. I just can't stand that they're lying and quoting "False Science" to win their points. While our dredging brothers are cleaning up the areas they are working in, I have yet to see ANY of these so called "Green Movement Groups" do much of anything to clean up the mess. Well except their annual trash pick ups for the TV News crews.

If pictures are not the way to go then what is? Voting all the incumbents out? That might work if there's actually someone worth voting for but I'm not going to hold my breath on that one.

Not just some good PR but alot of really good PR would be nice. Look up artisinal mining and you come up with "major source of pollution" and so on. Never mind that the articles are based on third world miners and the use of mercury.
All it took to get us where we are was inaction and a few rumors. Has mining been a problem in the past? Yes. Mountains were washed away, rivers filled with silt and chemicals were put into waters and lands. However; That was quite some time ago. Major steps have been taken to keep out lifestyle clean and environmentaly friendly. But even that is not the issue. Big oil can poison water supplies with impunity. Industry can pour millions of tons of crap into the streams and oceans without blame. Why? Because they have MONEY. The only voices heard in politics are those of Franklin, Jackson and Grant. If gold production was as profitable as oil we would have only one problem. They would regulate the little man out of the game.

Be that as it may, ask yourself this. What has worked for other sectors in the past?
When other groups were faced with opposition and survived, what did they do?

Writing to our government officials? Ad campeigns? Saving baby ducks on the 6 oclock news?

The truth rarely matters these days, so what then? How do we put a nicer face on our craft? If image is one of our problems, how should we address it?

Well except their annual trash pick ups for the TV News crews.

Ding! Ding! Ding! Winner! Winner! Chicken Dinner!

Do the trash pickup, show the school kids how to pan, get families involved in metal detecting, make sure everyone gets to hold a real nugget in their hand at least once in their lives (it's magic).

You have the perfect spot where you are digging GI. Right on the Arizona trail and right next to one of the biggest greenie attractions in the area.

Outreach is the key to a small group getting their agenda on the right side of public opinion. Instead of trying to organize prospectors (worse than herding cats - we're a cantankerous bunch) just find a few folks who can pan without scaring kids. Heck half of us look like Santa Claus or Yosemite Sam to the kiddies, it's not that big of a leap for them to become junior prospectors. Let them keep the gold they find and give them a little pan to practice with. Change the future!

Don't forget, we have a POWERFUL conservative who is fighting this over-regulation and greenie nonsense. He is Doc Hastings, head of the Natural Resources committee in d.c. I have emailed him in support of reforming the EPA and other issues. He is trying to eliminate the "sue and settle" actions of enviro groups.
If you send in some comments, he will send you back a newsletter on request.

The enviro non-profits get together every year and do river trash clean-ups. They get hundreds of volunteers and count the pounds of trash. They are WILDLY successful with this campaign in the northern sierra - just sayin.

You will notice a lack of comments in their report about "herding cats"

And he is stepping up his efforts to get it done because he is running out of time. Hope those that voted for him enjoy the "changes" that are taking place..........sorry bunch of :occasion18:s

Meanwhile, the Sierra Fund has re-scheduled the propaganda meeting about the dangers of mercury, which was cancelled due to the gov't shutdown. They are yelling "fire in a crowded theater" to get millions of opm's to do what dredgers did for free. Anybody planning to present the miners point of view? Oh well.

Sierra Fund Meeting back on.

This link is update on the meeting. Two items of interest: "the mercury contamination was found to be harmless to hikers, bikers, swimmers, etc." And "the
meeting was attended by wide diversity of people (including gold miners)"....

I highbank and I have only pulled just over an ounce of gold in my first season. I also pulled almost an ounce of Merc in just 2 of the ten weekends that I went out. this is a ridiculous amount of Merc. I turned quite a bit in that I never weighed but I am guessing that total I have pulled at least a couple ounces of Merc. Here are some pics and a short video. Don't worry about the video. The water was like 50 degrees in the pan and I had no cuts on my fingers. Action starts at 5:56 and the pic is of the two pans that were from the weekends I mentioned. All the silver looking stuff is Merc/Gold Amalgam.

WOW!!!! It looks like someone was playing fast and loose with the Mercury that location in the past! If you're going to keep working that area it might be time to buy a retort if you don't have one already.

Ya. I had to build one. See my video

Do not give locations of mercury, it will be added to the list of RECLAMATION areas for the sierra fund to receive grants and funding ........Oakview we need to make one of those retrorts :icon_thumright:

Full funding recommended for TSF?s $5.5 million CABY region proposal

chupa - thanks for posting this - not only will CABY have sites to reclaim, but they and other non-profits are planning to assert themselves as another enforcement agency with total control over their respective watersheds (read total ban on all panning, sluicing, sniping activities).

I spent a couple hours on the related documents links enclosed in your link - it is overwhelming how much socialist engineering is involved.

P.S. There is a related request that brings the total Sierra Fund appropriations up to 8 million.

P.P.S. - CABY stands for the Consumnes, American, Bear, Yuba river watersheds
