Re: Shouldn't Exist

Dont forget about taste!

Probably plated, its easy to plate coins, I find them all the time. Plating adds weight if its a heavy plate.
Also, is your scale accurate? not all scales are created equal or calibrated correctly. Also, oxygen adds weight when metal oxidizes those 02 atoms add up. When you melt tarnished silver or copper and reweigh it, its always less as the O2 is driven off.
Also, does it look like a 40%er on the side or doe sit look like a 90%er If its bonded metal then your onto something. otherwise. Its plated.

Digital photography is not a hard thing to do. If you can figure out how to get on the internet and do Email, and post on this site, I am sure you can figure out how to take a picture.

JD, does a half dollar weigh more when it is in a picture or not ? If a camera adds 10 pounds, how much should a picture of a half weigh ? Jim

I usually just scan mine and put them on here.

Have you done the bar napkin trick to check it out? Probably is plated I have a bunch of them you can usually tell by the mint mark as it will look filled in.

Re: Shouldn't Exist

Took the coin to several dealers. Verdict is still up in the air. Most told me to send it in to a grading service. They all looked at it under magnification. Seems it doesn't have the imperfections that plated coins have and weighs too much. Found a 1926s Oregon Trail Commemorative this week that would grade about 45. Boy, was that a surprise!
