should i buy a mtd with sound id and that displays numbers?

Well, I had Prizm III for 2 years. Found over 60 silver coins. Sold it on ebay for $230, and purchased Minelab Explorer II (on ebay) for $650 shipped. Went out with it 3 times, 2 times found a silver coin. But do not understand the machine well yet, hope it will come with the experience.

I HAVE BEEN USING AN ACE 250 and everything I find this year is hopefully going to a whites dfx. Everyone has there opinion but the but the dfx looks good to me. Looks like you can get one for 600 or a little less slightly used on ebay

I have been using an explorer for years, I can not imagine not having the tone id feature the more information the better. HHjs

look at the delta 4000 * it has a 0 to 99 number display -- in discrimate mode with rhe iron notched "back" in it has 3 tones -- low (iron) mid tone (aluminum /gold) and a high tone (copper and silver ) by using the tones and numbers together as a team it does very well at IDing things for a under $300 class detector ..---its very light wieght so you can really hunt for a long time without being wore out ---is it as good as a $1000 machine depth and ID wize ? no --but for 3 x the cost --I should hope their a little bit bit better. but to be able to get 90% of the stuff they get for 1/3rd the cost is fine by me.

The answer to this question is really difficult as detectors can do many things and much depends on your pocketbook. If you have unlimited funds to spend on a machine than yes I would get one that has tones and some sort of ID readout. I myself don't think there is a better machine out there than a minelab explorer, it has different tones which is key to this machine and also will readout VDI numbers or a smart screen system which uses a cursur to help determine the ID of the object. I have been using one for years and have followed right behind other high dollar machines and have pulled coins out behind them. Last year I dug over 400 silver coins and over 225 indianhead pennies with mine so I think that says something...

thank you all....is there some that are more affordable?

What's affordable for you? Personally, I think the White's XLT is a great all-around detector for the money, if you buy one used. It should probably be around $400 to $600. If you're willing to pay a bit more, I'd get a Minelab Explorer II. I hear it's about the same as the Explorer SE, which I use now and couldn't be happier with.

Personally, I'm a purest. Forget the displays (they are not accurate) & trust your ears. I spend no time looking at my Cortes display when I had it, speed is the name of the game in the UK. Beep & dig works for me. If its not in my pouch in about 10 seconds then I'm wasting time. I clear lots of trash as well which is not everyones style.
