Should be easy to ID but I'm stumped

Found this last weekend on a very old property and have been curious about its ID and age. The first thing that came to mind was some type of medal holder/hanger. Tried Google image search to no avail. Your help is most appreciated. Thanks!

Bigcypresshunter, you are the man! Not only an ID, but a visual aid and some background, too. Well done.

You are most welcome!

So many times the OP doesnt even bother responding to my work or the work of other members. It got so bad that was one of the reasons I quit helping here. The other reason was that TN doesnt save the archives.

I received a nice PM from your hunting buddy Granthansen. http://treasure-detectors.com/2012/07/03/southwest-new-jersey-iron-men/ Its polite people like you and he that make me want to come back and keep helping again. Its very nice to get some acknowlegement. Thanks.:icon_thumright: You guys made my day.

And it's members like you, sharing their vast knowledge and time, that make this forum and hobby so engaging. Every find is a learning experience and this successful one is all thanks to you. :notworthy:

I have a buddy that wants to go out and buy a detector to make some of the big finds that he reads about so he can sell them and make some quick bucks.. I told him he has the wrong attitude. He just doesnt understand. There is nothing wrong with selling some finds but the hobby is NOT about money. Its about the history and learning. Seeing how people in the past lived... ...holding a piece of history. My friend just doesnt get it...

If I metal detected solely to make money I'd be in the poor house! You'd have to get some serious percentage of valuable digs to make a living off it. Plus, I'd say some of the cooler finds have no monetary value at all. My grandfather was a tool and dye maker, and a good metalsmith. He made a LOT of decorative items and one-of-a-kind tools. In my backyard (formerly his backyard) I dug up a spatula head he made. Why he made a spatula head? Well, if someone needed something, he'd make it instead of buying it! Here's the story on that one:
