Dad & I spent the last 2 days gridding the last bit of the site. (Dad 6 hours, me 11 hours 45 mins) We finished it just in time as the tractor had started to drill the next crop into the field.
This area has been good to us, but I was beginning to get bored of digging 100+ shotgun shells every outing.

4 Scrappies
2 Lead Tokens
A Shot 1935 Penny
Lead Pilgrims Badge with a standing Saint
Medieval Hair Pin
Medieval Thimble
A circa 19th C Thimble with fabric in it
2 Broken Roman Rings - 1 with a blue glass intaglio - very worn but it might have an image of Victory Advancing Left
Melted or badly cast Saxon Brooch
3 Hammered - 1606 Sixpence, 2 Edward I Pennies

This spot was very good to you, I would happily dig a 100+ shotgun cartridges for the goodies you got up.
Congrats, can't wait to see what your next spot turns up.

Hi Crusader, more great finds. To me the best is the fabric. I would think this can be readily identified as to age and possibly area of manufacture. "Cool Beans" crusader.....Joe McDonough

Very productive day! And again a penny used as target for shooting.. 8-)

Productive 2 days, although the second day was very slow but we just had to finish the full area.

I guess an expert could, to me it just tells a story of either someone making the thimble fit better, or more comfortable for longs hours of use.

I did happily dig these up at first but after getting over 1000 & many just being the small center piece, they became a pain to chase around. But like all our fields, its less junk to worry about next year.

Going out with a bang. Very nice finds Cru. Would you go back next season or is this field done for good?

No field is done for good. But when we have gridded the same spot for 10 years or more, you have to find new spots to bring your find rate up to what we now expect. This is our first year, so a long way to go.

Very true. No place is ever hunted out but when the finds are far and few between it makes you want to try somewhere else and leave that as a back up. 10 years at the same spot! I wish my sites lasted more than 10 trips. Ill be keeping an eye out for your posts. I always enjoy what you recover.

To grid this whole site took about 100 man hours, so a lot more than 1 trip a year. Although next year will probably only be half the time, as we can be more concentrated.

Great finds!
