Shot Gun Shell?

While out at the fair grounds I found what looks to be a shot gun shell. I have never heard of them being copper before, only plastic and paper. The writing on the shell by the primer is readable to some extent but only every third or so letter. The shell is about 2 inches long and broken at the end from decomposing. The diameter is just under an inch. Sorry no pitures I have taken several but they did not turn out too well. Thanks for your input.
 

Its probably brass,

They were common in the 40/50s
