On Thursday afternoon I received an invitation to detect a friend’s house in Tamworth, ON. Ian & Melanie's home dates to about 1890 and is absolutely beautiful! I was only able to detect the front yard for about an hour, as we had dinner plans. Unfortunately, the beautiful stone wall that sat in front of the house is now gone, it had to be removed as it was literally falling down and had become a safety risk to their kids. I took this c2015 picture from Google Maps... now all that remains of where the wall and trees sat is a pile of dirt sloping to the road.

Sorry, there are no pics of 'finds from the dirt' this time, as I was moving fast. I was closely followed around by his two daughters ages 7 & 9 who anxiously awaited every find I made in their front yard. I found a clock winder key, a modern house key and 3 pennies, which I gave to them. I also found what I initially thought was a brass wedding band, but now I think it might be iron. I'm going to tumble it and present it to Ian & Mel at a later time.

My most interesting finds from here were the eyeball finds I made in the dirt along the cedar fence line of the property. I found an ink bottle, what I think is an old Listerine bottle, a small blown-glass pill bottle and a decorative serving spoon. The bottles cleaned up amazing and I'm thinking about tumbling the spoon this winter to remove the corrosion and rust. I'm thinking the bottles originally had paper labels glued on. Bottles almost always seem to come out of the ground with cracks from having been frozen with water in them. I found these mixed in with rocks by a fence, so I feel the secret to their surviving was good drainage. They also have an old chicken coop on the property and seem very interested to have me detect in that area for some reason. I'd like to get back here again in the fall.
Thanks very much to Ian and his lovely family for permitting me to detect their yard. :occasion14:
Dave

Nice bunch of digs, I especially like the skinny bottle, the ink well, and love that home. Too bad about that rock wall, it sets the place off.

Nice looking place to detect for sure. Some real cool saves so far. Can’t wait to see what else you may find. I really like the way you clean those bottles up. They look like new again. Nice story, nice finds, nice pictures, and great friends. Congrats

Sorry for taking so long to respond to everyone who took the time to reply to my post, I've been busy working a farm show all week in Southwestern Ontario.
:laughing7:

Not bad for just an hour of looking .And it sounds like your young company enjoyed the time spent looking also

I think they were most amazed at what they'd been walking on for the past 9 years. :icon_thumright:

Thanks for your post ghf,
Dave

Nice finds. I like the bottles.

Thank you Trezurehunter, finding a complete undamaged bottle when detecting is always a bonus.

Thanks for your post Don. :hello:
It wasn't until I did the Google Maps search when I got home that I saw what the old wall looked like.
Such a shame that they wouldn't have made the effort to stabilize and preserve it for future generations.

Thanks for your post and for all of the compliments Hawks. :occasion14:
I would like to get back there when the fall weather comes along, there just have to be more bottles in the woods where I found these ones.

Best of luck to you,
Dave

Nice finds! :icon_thumleft: That small skinny bottle is interesting!

Upon closer inspection I can just make out the word 'Holland' around the base of the skinny bottle.
Dave

Antiquarian I have two neighbor boys that have taken an interest in my bottle digging and metal detecting habits .I take them along some times .They are happy with anything they find .What that tells me is I am just someone that grew old but never grew up .

I think detectorists are all boys that never grew up... the secret is to try and stay young at heart. :occasion14:

Best of luck to you!
