Went out for a quick hunt this evening. First spot looked good on paper, but actually checking out the site.. turned out to be a bust. While I was bummed about that I found a vacant lot that looked promising. PUlled the minelab out and started scanning. The place was INSANELY trashy, and specifically with pull tab / bottle caps tones. Very tough to see through the clutter. Thought I'd switch up to the 5" to see that would help. Even with the 5" the targets were sounding off all over the place.

I got a shallow nickel/bottle cap tone. Normally I would pass this up, but thought I'd pop the bottle cap out, so I could open the area a bit. To my surprise, and only a inch down, a 1905 V-Nickel came out. I went for about an hour without any good targets and ended the evening with a 1957 D Wheatie and a weird pin.

I'll try that spot again tomorrow, might have better luck.. but the V-Nickel was great to get.

Nice finds. Really like the pin. And I'd give an eye tooth to find a V nickel. ;)

Do you have a smaller coil for the minelab? That might help you get between trashy hits. Otherwise, sounds like you have a lot of digging to do.

I have X-8 and X-5 Stealths for the minelab. 5" was still super chatty.. there is just a ton of targets here. I think I'll just need to clean it up to get to the good stuff. It was a mystery why that V was so close to the surface... normally they're anywhere from 5-7" down. Definitely not 1".

Nice nickel. Any idea how many V's you've found so far? HH and good luck tomorrow.

Wow, you are going to be known as the King of V! ;D ;) Every time out you are finding one. That is sweet. That is crazy on the nickels. Are you detecting places that have been hunted and nickel's passed up?

I haven't found a shield nickel yet. That is about second on my to find list.

I think so.. also combined with the fact that the areas I'm hunting are fairly trashy, it makes it easy to pass up on the nickel tones. I'm actually developing a 'system' if you can say that on old nickels.. and it appears to be working.

looks like the head of the snake on the pin has a spot that is missing a stone? Am I seeing that right?
