Made it out on a neighbors property this week to do a little swinging.
I had tried to find this site in the past but no dice.
The farmer plowed some new ground in the area of this site.
I asked if he would mind me detecting it before he plants it, he said go ahead.
Well my trip out was cut short when the XLT snapped where the shaft snaps into the handle area.
I'm sure I looked goofy out there swinging the coil with one hand and holding the handle in the other. Anyway I did allright.
Here are my finds.

Thanks ISpike, I'm thinking the pocket knife dates to Civil War era but not for sure.

Good to see you out sweeping! Where in the heck is Buck? You need to get him out in the fields before all the coppers are dug out of the Kentucky soil. :laughing9:

Keep the passion high!

You must have been hunting on your hands and knees with that broken detector. Anyway, it was worth looking the fool with those finds :headbang:

It wore me out swinging like a fool. Thanks

HB,

I really think this knife is a great find. It is similar in construction to the knive I found last year at an 1860s homestead site. Many of the later "buck knives" had wood or faux wood inlays on the sides, but the 19th c. pocket knives tended to be one piece of metal on each side, often decorated or with a patriotic motif, and a little smaller than the later knives.

I'd date this one 1860-1880ish.

I've only found one complete pocket knife from that time frame in 17 years of digging, so I feel that this they are really neat and infrequent finds.

Congrats!

Buck was in research mode. Buck is now--in DIGGING MODE. ;D

It's hard to keep up with research when your team goes through 160 sites in a year and a half.

Harvest comes a little later for us here than it does for you up there. Of course, we get to hunt all of December, January, and February most of the time too. :tongue3:
