Yes, it's early. More like a knee buckle I would say. (maybe even strap)

Is it a bit small for a shoe buckle IP?

shaun and patch, I thought it looked a little small too. When you guess size (based on Garibaldi's fingers :D) it's probably a 48 mm wide. It's got the wrong bend for a shoe buckle, but it does conform in size and curve to some of the larger size knee buckles (mid-late 1700's)

p.s. then again, if Garibaldi has a fist like a virginia ham it might be a deformed shoe buckle ;D

trader, yes, it looks somewhat like the shape of many shuttle type shoes buckles, but it's the size that is the problem. As well, this is a pin held chape buckle (unlike your top two) and it is the type and size of a knee buckle (specifically vesica shaped)

Yes, is is a great avatar and diagram Mike! About the diagram; it is not all shoe buckles pictured. The bottom row for instance is sub-rectangular and round stock buckes, sub-rectangular, round, and oval knee buckles, double spiked garter buckles, etc., with the next row up being knee buckles, hat buckles, etc.. The shoe buckles are the ones above. It can get confusing sometimes when you don't have a key to go with the diagram.

Thank you all for your unput and Diagrams.
So, do we all agree most likely a knee buckle?
Seem like it is. :icon_scratch:
