Found this today at 8 inches in an old farm field that dates back to late 1700's. I Believe it could be a belt buckle. But also think it could be something used to strap/tie an animal. Any ideas how old it might be or what it was used for? I cleaned it off but found no markings. It appears to be hand forged.

4-H: Knocked down the value to whom? Most of us relic-
collectors do this hobby for our own enjoyment. When you
visit a museum as I did recently the artifacts on display were
recognizable, not as found. Besides if you are in this hobby
for profit you will soon be penneyless.

Agreed. It's a harness buckle shield.
