Re: Shipwreck in '44?

Bigcypress,
theres alot of graveyards along the beaches on the east coast of florida, mostly from wrecks offshore where bodies washed up,the residents just buried them in the dunes,i know of a few in the daytona/ormond beach areas.with all the erosion from the past and recent storms,im sure some or parts of the bodies or wooden coffins that they were buried in got washed out onto the beaches.the dead that were buried at sea were usally wrapped in cloth and slid off a ship,no tags just a few prayers an off to davey jones locker they go.

Re: Shipwreck in '44?

Cornelius, I have caught your attention and sure can use your help. From what I have read you are a busy man.
I'm sure I have not done enough research, but I was computer illiterate 2 months ago. Sure I have pics as I have also learned to use a digital camera.
Instead of repeating the story here, hopefully you will have time to read "treasure beach find" in the "What Is It' section of this forum.
Thank You Cornelius and Fisheye for your thoughts.

Re: Shipwreck in '44?

Just asking again if anyone knows of a shipwreck, or missing ship, off the Florida East coast in 1844, 1744, or maybe 1944. I am still trying to ID this find.

Re: Shipwreck in '44?

BigCypress,
You know, I thought about this and there could be any number of scenarios for this tag.? It also could have been on a chain as a momento or keepsake since the child died shortly after birth.? As usual, swimming at the beach and it comes apart or falls off now to become a relic of the sea.

There are just too many options or scenarios as to why this tag was found where it was to just tie it to a shipwreck. I think more research needs to be put into finding the owner (parents) and what happened.? Trace down the dates and maybe it will lead to some clues.

Re: Shipwreck in '44?

RGecy, Thanks for the thoughts. Yes, there are many scenarios and I think I have thought of them all.
The only problem with it being a memento or keepsake is the numbers on the back. It is also unusually thin. I was told it looked like a silver coffin tag with a hole for the nail. I have written to the Indian River Genealogical Society.(IRGS). So far no match.
It's a longshot, but there is an 1800,s shipwreck directly offshore, along with a 1715 site, I was told by someone diving that lease. I thought if any one knew of a shipwreck in '44 they would tell me.

Re: Shipwreck in '44?

Have you been to the old cemeteries in the neighbourhood? They would probably record anonymous sailors that have drifted a shore.

Re: Shipwreck in '44?

Thank You JT and dk-diver. This is a thin silver tag of some kind with the official looking numbers G-1506 on the back. The dates show a 3-day old infant child that is not anonymous.
There was only a few hundred soldiers and settlers in the area in 1844 and they were driven out by Indian hostilities, and few would return. The St. Lucie county 1850 census shows a Michael Hall in the Army, but nothing else. I am new to the computer. A reader found for me a Jo Anna Hall born in 1843, parents from Virginia, but nothing else. I'm not sure this is the same child, unless she was buried at sea or a shipwreck.
There IS two shipwrecks directly offshore, also a WWII Avenger a distance away. One of the unidentified shipwrecks is believed to be mid-1800's. I don't think I should repeat the whole research here, on the shipwreck forum. I will keep anyone updated on the original "what is it" post.

Last time, Cornelius, Do you know of an English shipwreck in '44 off the Florida coast? It's a longshot, I realize, but you seem to be the best person to ask on this site with all your research history.
Thank You, bigcypresshunter.

Also, I,m thinking about what you said earlier about the way Europeans write dates.(day before month) Does this mean this tag is American? That would be an important clue.
