hello, on vacation at the outer banks of N. Carolina and hit a local beach. didn't find much, except some coins and a weird nail. It was found high up from the beach and has 2 pointy ends and no head. It also measures about an 1 and a half. I don't know what it is called but it has been suggested that that type of nail was used in shipbuilding. Also, you should know that the area I'm detecting is called the "graveyard of the Atlantic". I think that it may have been used fir decking or possibly in the siding of a very small boat. From what i have read, they no longer mass produce these nail. Any information or conjectures are appreciated.

Thanks

Morning Golden....

Oh, the Outer Banks :)...what an awesome place. My hubby's family are all over the Banks!!! LOL

We did not metal detect, but I was there to take pics of the headstones at a very old family cemetery (I am recording all cemeteries, etc....love genealogy). Then my boys and I decided to walk along the beach area. I picked up lots and lots of corroded items that looked interesting to me. I have been soaking them in baking soda since April. Some are starting to look like something. They actually look like square nails and some may have wood still attached. Can't really say for sure on that. I was using these items to help me understand and find ways to clean old items, safely :)...so these are my test items.

Oh, if you ever get to Salvo on the sound side in that old campground (which we were told WE CAN NOT METAL DETECT!!! :(...I asked when I called about the cemetery and the missing headstones, it's owned by the Park Service).....imagine all the awesome stuff we could find and it's so overgrown..like digging would cause any damage...geez!! !!! My hubby, his brother and parents use to camp there all the time!! Anyways....if you ever visit that cemetery...the two headstones facing the sound side that are now broken :(...is where my hubby's 3rd great grandparents are buried. Last time I was at the cemetery, in 1995, I video taped the entire cemetery, Thank Goodness I did, cause now Bannister and Dorothy Midgette's headstones are broken and the broken pieces are gone and I have proof they are buried there!!!!

Oh, one of the items I am soaking is round and has a rugged edge to it....can't seem to get anymore corrosion off of it to really tell. Can't tell if it's a nail...and a piece is broken on the side with a hole. So I am really excited to see what this item really is!!!

I did not like hitting Nags Head beaches.....I did like hitting the beach down in Frisco / Buxton area, besides, they have sea shells down that way :) and pretty ones!!!

As for the item you found...really hard to say...could be a nail. No telling what you could find along the VA/NC beaches after the storms leave their mark!!! I save the "unusual" items, just incase :). Hope you get the chance to hit the Outer Banks again!!!
