Does anyone happen to have some handy dandy reference material available that can list ships of the Flota de Nueva Espana that were never heard of again (ie location of loss unknown) on the northern Gulf route between Vera Cruz and Havana?

I have Singer's book but I'd like to see if anyone has some different information.

Dates, Name of the ship, the almirante, etc would be nice as well.

Thanks,

Pcola

PcolaBoy,
I asked this same question awhile back. It seems that if anybody has this info their not willing to give it up. Maybe you will have better luck.

Thanks for the great replies. JeffK...the 1676 report of a Dutch ship is interesting since there was a small bronze dutch cannon dredged up from Pensacola Pass (off Santa Rosa Island) in the early 1960's.

There was no additional investigation into the location where it was found because the operator of the dredge kept the cannon for himself for many years until it was finally donated to a local museum after he died. The cannon is believed to be a mid-to-late 17th century dutch design. I realize that dutch cannons could have been aboard any other colonial power's ship used as a weapon or ballast.

Thanks again for the info.

Thanks for the wealth of info Fisheye. I'm primarily interested in ships lost without a trace on the northern gulf route that the Nueva Espana fleet (as well as normal merchant traffic) took eastward from Veracruz to Havana - particularly between 1561 and 1698. This 137 year period is when the northern Gulf had no permanent settlement from colonial powers (aside from San Marcos de Apalache est. 1679) and the many protected harbors were perfect for pirate operations.

From my reading, most of the outbound Nueva Espana fleet would sail northward out of Veracruz hugging the coast until they reached 27 degrees lattitude and turned east across the gulf with prevailing winds followed by a southerly course around the keys to Havana. This route would have placed the easterly course only 200 miles south of the Florida Panhandle. When Spain indirectly assisted the American cause in 1778, British warships operating out of Pensacola and Mobile routinely patrolled this area (several great examples can be found in the log of the H.M.S. Mentor 1779-1781) specifically to capture eastbound Spanish merchant shipping. Of course there's no telling how many could have been potentially blown ashore from hurricanes in that period either.

With this in mind, I cannot help but think that this could have been the fate, thanks to pirates, of at least a few of the lost Spanish ships traveling this route during the 1561 - 1698 period. I had a Florida History professor that put this "bug" in my ear 20+ years ago and it has stuck with me ever since. Personally I think the whole Billy Bowlegs and Gasparilla stuff is crap but I think they could have been legends drawn from vague stories of real life events from a much earlier period. This is how much of folklore is created everywhere.

Maybe I'm just dreaming - but there have been gold escudos found on beaches in my area during beach renourishment operations (ie that were dredged from offshore) that would not have been simple pocket spills. "And that's all I have to say about that..." :-X

Pcola,

Do some research on the past dredge operations and find out where they got their dredge material from. Its all public info and they would have had to get permits from the state to do it.Sometimes they dredge from the bays or intercoastals then dump it on the beach like they did at daytona and new smyrna beach. The southern part of new smyrna beach was pumped from offshore, but they pumped it to a borrow pit first(don't know why)then pumped it onto the beach.I followed all the pipes to see where they went and even found the bar where all the dredge guys hung out.Bought em a few beers to pick their brains about shipwreck artifacts. They are well aware that goodies comes thru the pipes.I then got permission from the supervisor to MD at the pipe outlet on the beach. They normally don't want anyone near it as they push the sand around with bull dozers. They told me to keep an eye out for them.Did i find anything? No,just trash. They did though. One guy said a 8 inch cannon ball came out of the pipe when they were working daytona. It came out of the intercoastal south of ponce inlet on the west side of a spoil island. In July of 1863 during the civil war 2 union ships shelled new smyrna beach for 2 days. The stone wharf and a 40 room hotel was destroyed.Im sure there are lots of cannon balls all over the land and in the water. The treasure coast dredge material they got it from offshore somewhere.

I know (within 200 meters) where the dredge ship was located offshore when the coins came out of the pipe onto the beach. Unfortunately, I was not the fortunate bulldozer driver who happened to see them hit the sand.

Also, during the early 1960's a canal community was being created in Destin, Florida (about 30 miles further down the coast from the spot above). A crane operator was working to dig one of the many canals and started pulling up several hundred silver coins and a few silver bars. There's a newspaper article in the special collections department of the Pensacola Main Library detailing the incident. Apparently the guy got to keep 50% of what he found with the rest of it going to the developer of the subdivision. For any of you fellow Panhandler's reading this, it was the Holiday Isles community just off the Destin Harbor.
