PS... dont get me wrong... these are considered a "model"... and sell for some good money.

I’ve seen new stuff that was “distressed” to make it look old. If that cannon is distressed and newly made its the best distress job I’ve ever seen.

It was made many years ago... distressed look THEN... now some 50 years later in various environments its has taken on that look that makes it even better looking. :)

There are several tell-tale signs that are obvious to someone like myself that says it all immediately upon seeing it without even enlarging the pictures... BUT just to make sure and to satisfy you I enlarged some of the OP's pics :P

Cannon have been my thing since i could hang / sit on one.

I'm definitely interested in the tell tale signs. I'm $150 into it.

First and formost is the "detail" on it.
The coat of arms detail in particular... the lack thereof.
No foundry would produce such vague marking.
Then ... the "rivets"... you can tell they are not what they are imitating.

Look... its like this... when you have seen 1000 of these over a 50 year period you tend to just know these things.
Its like when someone hands me silver item or gold item... i can tell by eye 99.99% of the time if its real or not simply by holding / eyeing it.

I completely understand what you're saying and appreciate the feedback. I really had no clue, but the aging just looked so good I felt the 150 was worth the gamble.

I back my opinion(s) of your item with 33+ years of antiquity dealing and appraisals and collecting.
With a main knowledge / interest in anything PRE 1800... especially stuff like this.
Now...
As far as cannon are concerned...
I have collected / bought /sold them... ALL antique or replica... and at one time had over 100 of them before selling them off over years.
And i have played on em from the age of 4 at the forts of St. Augustine... to the museums of Art McKee and Mel Fisher on.
I have watched encrusted ones become like new again... I have seen ones no one else has ever seen... and am considered an expert by some although i don't proclaim it... guess i earned it simply by association.

TOTALLY worth it... fair price.

I'd say it's an attractive authentic reproduction.
Adding the " officer's personal items returning from Germany after serving in WW2" adds to the intrigue.
Welcome to Treasurenet !!
Don in SoCal.
Emphasis on "rumored" lol. Anyway, not a home run I've concluded. Oh well - I appreciate the feed back all the same. Thanks for the add. I have a number of other items I'll be posting soon actually. Some WW2 pieces, and native american artifacts.

Recent find at a local sale - rumored to have been found in an officer's personal items returning from Germany after serving in WW2. Rumored being the key word. I gambled on it, but have no clue if the item is authentic or a reproduction. Any thoughts and ideas is greatly appreciated. Cannon itself measures approximately 17 inches
Very Cool Piece!!! Congrats!!!

The coat of arms is pretending to be Spanish. It is really, really badly proportioned. The bands are far to thick and pronounced and the barrel to spindly. But at that price, it's a winner.
