Six or seven years ago I became aware of gold and 8 reales being dredged up to the beach about ten miles north of Cape May. I saw a few of the coins and they dated after the revolution and prior to the war of 1812. I suspected it might be the Juno, but after doing some reading I heard the Juno was found off of Virginia several years ago. Was that Virginia wreck ever proved to be the Juno beyond doubt?

I'm only revealing this because after procrastinating, and finally getting around to perhaps a dive or two, I heard that a treasure wreck was found (and claimed) about ten or twenty miles north of Cape May this year near the coast, yet I have no details. Just to satisfy my curiosity, was that wreck in fact the Juno, which had formerly thought to have sunk either twenty miles east of Cape May or in the mouth of the Delaware? You guys would know I guess. Thanks.

No, it was not. The research leads one to believe it is out in deeper water, not near the shore.

scuba dude, did you hear anything about a wreck found north of cape may within the last two years? I was told by a guy who follows these things that one was found, and I assumed it was the wreck from which the dredge finds came from. The dates on the coins I saw suggested the Juno, as did the general location. When the Juno was lost, as you know one report had the boat spotted 20 miles off of cape may when it sank, but that doesn't necesarily mean the sighting was correct, or that the ship could not have drifted north ten or fifteen miles in the storm. If my firend was mistaken, and no wreck has been claimed north of cape may, then I guess I've opened my big fat mouth too soon:tongue3:

I did not hear of that. I'm not one that hears too much anyway.

You should be able to find some information of where the sand borrow areas are/were. They aren't likely to be more than a mile or so off the beach. There should also have been some preliminary mag survey work done to prevent ripping into an old wreck. That will be harder to find, but it should be available.

The Juno while it would be nice to find, is going to be a legal nightmare. If treasure salvage is the end goal I'd pick another wreck. There were a lot of fatalities, and I believe it does qualify as an actual sovereign warship.

Good luck with you quest.

I thought I heard Odyssey was involved some how. Weren't rights given to Spain for the Juno and LaGalga years ago?

Yes, Spain was awarded both vessels. We're talking about the alleged Juno site that the court awarded, and pondering where the real site is......

John Amrhein has some info on it here:

johnnyi, I live near NJ and have followed the Juno Claim. While the company that claims they found the Juno, lost the court case. I was lucky enough to see some of the side scan images that were taken on what was claimed to be the Juno. I did not see any evidence of silver bars or rectangular objects in the side scan images.
If I remember correctly, the Juno was supposed to be carrying quite a bit of Silver Bars as cargo. Personally, from what I've seen of the side scan images and the historic fact that the Juno was last sighted 20 miles from Cape May, I find it hard to believe that the wreck was found near the Virginia border.
Contact me by PM or e-mail. I'll give you my phone number. I'd like to meet you and see pictures of the coins that were found.
