Ship wreck beach find

My dad found this out of Lake Erie. Thought it was neat and wanted to share. We think it's from an old boat. Not sure of the age. But just wanted to share.

Looks like it would make a great door knocker.
 

That is a wicked cool find. I wonder what it's story is. Definitely hand forged.

You should post it in the "what is it" forum. Looks like some kind of old fancy copper hardware item?
 

looks like some type of spring device (shock absorber)

I may be way off. but could it have been from where someone Launched a Boat from a Trailer ?

No, that stumps me too! I'm just a small part of a big team you know! :)
It bears some resemblance to a carburetor choke butterfly valve, in that the round thingy would seem to pivot on the shaft its attached to. And then the spring could be a bimetallic spring that opens it when warm, but I've never seen one quite like that, and attached to the flap itself would be odd, as they normally turn the shaft that the flap is on... and it would leave the linkage in the way, throwing off your fuel mixture... so I really don't think that's it.
