First time post here. I was metal detecting the beach in Avalon New Jersey. I found this in the surf about 4 inches down. Is it a spike from an old sailing ship?

What are the dimensions of the spike? :) Is it made out of brass?

Looks to be what you describe.
I find lots of them at an old shipyard I hunt.
You got a nice one

Forgot to say welcome :hello:
Hopefully you are on a shipyard site, most of my best finds are from them.

Looks like a deck spike. The material it is made from is called Muntz Metal. named after George Muntz. The Royal Navy switched from copper to Muntz metal in and around the late 1830's. Some of the newer cargo haulers from the same time period were also outfitted with entire hulls covered in this almost gold looking Muntz metal. There were allot of shipwrecks right in the shoals off of Herefords Inlet. The salvage crews that made their living stripping these wrecked ships were called, Wreckers. Nice find... Art
