Shield type thing?

A buddy of mine found this yesterday. It's a shield thingy with a big ornate D on it. And the back ground is kind of a basket weave design. It measures 2" tall and 1.75" wide. It seems to be made of copper with a silver plating that's worn off quite a bit. It's got curved form to it ~ kinda like an emblem on the front of a bicycle. Any ideas?
