Northern Michigan (Lake Michigan shoreline). I dug a nice 'copper' culture artifact and feet away get a deep iron hit. I typically would pass but given the area I was in it was a very rare occurrence. It is the shape of a shield and was affixed to something. There is some rusted-thru spot but the sand is extremely dry. Given the thickness of the steel...Old I suspect. It does look like an old doorbell.

One other thought is part of a roll shade blind?Or some other roller like a vacuum beater brush end?

I am thinking that it a bit older as it was buried in quite deep and surrounded by "fur trade" artifacts (and copper culture items). It is clearly in the shape of a shield...But other than that I have nothing
