It was beautiful out last night (for mid December) so I hit the park and dug a crusty Shield Nickel. Not much to look at but it’s only the 4th I’ve dug in 5 years and despite its condition it’s probably the nicest of them :)

I think it should clean up decent in GoJo.

Nice find. I have yet to find one of those, unless I found one that was so corroded and didn't recognize it. That is in mice shape. Hope you post a picture of it after the cleaning, as I am curious how well that GoJo works. Congrats.

Actually in really good condition for one of those, congratulations hope you can get a date.

Weird how the crustiness seems to be worse on the shield side, or is that just how the pics turned out? Crusty or not that's a great coin.

The first one I found was worn completely smooth. I was only able to deduce it was likely a shield nickel by comparing its diameter and gauge to other nickels.

GoJo usually works good on this red crust. Its a slow process that takes some time but I’ll try to remember to post the results. Here’s a thread I posted some previous results in -

I think I can see an “8” but that’s it......

Yeah, the reverse is either more worn or more eaten away by corrosion (or both). I got maximum detail in my photos by holding it at just the right angle.

Are you using just the regular white slimy GoJo, or the gritty stuff?

Congratulations on a super find! Thanks for sharing.

I’m not super familiar with the different types of GoJo. It’s the stuff in the orange bottle, the actually stuff is white and gritty.

Hey squirrel she’s a beauty I’ve only found one and It had raise I couldn’t make out the date so I tried cleaning it and ruined it all I have left is the picture how it was when I found it which I wish I could bring it back. Merry Christmas squirrel

Nice find Squirrel. I just found 2 myself last week and I'm going to try your Gojo method. Thanks for posting that info.

Squirrel yours is in great shape, all things considered.
Here's what the only one I've ever found looked like (reverse).
On the obverse I know there were some stars when we pulled it out of the ground (my son and I0, but between it drying out and my son rubbing it to try to figure out what it was....the stars are completely gone, as is any chance at a date.

Congrats on your find!

Congratulations finding a Nickel that is hard to find!

Cool find congradulations.

Put it in some ketchup to remove that red oxidation (really!)...the ketchup will turn black as it works. Keep an eye on it till you're happy with it....couple hours to a day or so. :icon_thumleft:
