Over the River and thru the Woods...
Detector(s) used
Team Tesoro
Dug this yesterday on property dating back to the early 1800's (possibly earlier). I originally thought it was an old hood badge for a farm tractor but cannot find a match. Too wide for a bicycle as well. It is two inches long by one and one-half inches wide and made of brass. Any help is greatly appreciated... :icon_thumright:

Andy, does this thing have a curve to it like it wraps around a pipe or bar? Or is it flat?

It has a very slight curve - definitely not enough to wrap a bar/pipe. The upper right corner has a slight bend from being dropped or hit with something. The back has one small contact point where it looks like it could have held a pin shank at one time.

Andy,
It kinda looks like this England / St George Shield.

I think Rob is on to something. Where are those bloody Brits when you need them? :dontknow: :tongue3: :laughing9:
Must be having tea? ;D

Andy,
Send it in to "Ask Mark Parker" in W & ET magazine if you can't get an answer.

Cheers Mate,
Sir Dug of Eatsalot

Thanks for jumping in SS! I must have looked at over 500 pics of motorcycle emblems and came up with nothing. Most every single one has the manufacturer's name or initials on the badge... :dontknow:

Hmmmm...I will have another look, it it wasn't curved I would have said Horse fitting, but the single fixing point at the back is strange :icon_scratch:

That's what's driving me nuts. The curvature is extremely slight but the single attach point is steering me towards a hat pin. There is plenty of history to the property as far as CW troop movement/camp nearby and there was an old stagecoach road that runs straight through the property... :icon_scratch:

The cross is not a cross, I think just a random pattern, The cross bar is in the middle, were as on a cross it is offset towards the top.

Great catch SS.

Andy, the more I look at it, it is about the right size for an ornate buggy or carriage rein end. Generally, they are smaller and plain as shown in Crouch's relic book as # 7 on page 140. It would be logical that the reins for buggies and carriages would be wider and thicker leather than for a single horse tack. (Help cavtrooper or Creskol). The back may have had a pin that pressed into the small hole and served as an attachment to the end of the leather reins. That's my story and I'm sticking to it-LOL, Quindy.

I'm going to have to get a copy of that book...LOL

Strong possibility for that Q - this was dug about thirty feet from where the old stage road. Still cannot find any pics that come close to this one... :dontknow:

You have to remember that a few of the Stage Coach lines were very small and ran one on two coaches , they would have had a Smith make an emblem set for just them so there may not be much data on what it was or who !

Look and see if there where any Stage coach lines around the area that fit this size .

Just a guess to help one think of something to look for as I do not know what it is.
