I have been in a terrible slump since I did all this winter research! Go figure..
But I found this neat little shield today in an area that usually has early 1800's finds.

shield reverse.jpg

As you can see, it has a great patina, is only about 1 1/2" tall. It is fairly heavy brass.
it has the teeth that are used to apply to leather. It has no surface design, so, I'm guessing it was either
painted or enameled, or more likely, was just polished brass, with a smooth surface.
Could it be something on a belt? or on some horse tack or straps? Decoration on a saddle? Has anyone seen anything like it
that would place it in a probable use?
I don't think this is anything complicated. Prob. just a decoration for something leather, but what?
As always, any help will be greatly appreciated. And Happy Hunting everyone! Hope you are doing better than I..

I think its small for a saddle shield and they would have engraving? Bridle or belt tip?

I think you answered all the questions you asked.

Thanks Ironhorse, nice pic. It would have to be attached to a single layer of leather, but it would work..

I would think bridle boss or saddle shield - mid-late 1800's? Very nice find.

Thanks, I like it. I'll look up a bridle boss. (I'm obviously not a horse guy) lol

Thanks, I thought about a belt, but unless its a decoration, wasn't sure how it was used.. not sure about the tip though.

Thanks for all the help folks! HH!
