Found near colonial artifacts. Came out of the ground looking like that. No electrolysis needed! Is it a shell fragment or a pipe or kettle.

It is too thin-walled (1/4" or less) to be a fragment from an exploded cannonball. However, it MIGHT be a fragment of an exploded ball-grenade from the RevWar or War-Of-1812 era. To confirm or cancel that potential ID, there's three things you need to do:
1- Do your best to accurately calculate the ball's diameter, by tracing the curvature of the piece you found. Ball-grenades from that era were about 3.5" to 3.6" in diameter, or a bit less. So, if the diamter is bigger than that size, it is not a fragment of Military Ordnance, but instead, a cast-iron pot.
2- Research to see if there was a battle at the spot you found it at.
3- Do additional searching at that spot. There should be more pieces of the object in the immediate vicinity. The other pieces can tell you whether they are from a ball-grenade or an iron pot.
