Yes, that is the common name. The official designation is 7.92 X 57 and Mauser had little to do with it other than making the weapons that the ammo fit.

I thought so. I own and shoot 4 WWII Mauser Rifles, 8 if you count the Swedes in 6.5mm from pre WWI. If you go to buy hunting ammo the label the boxes 8X57 Mauser at least here in the USA. Monty
