Today was a marathon day for me. Lots to do and so little time to do it all. I was determined though to get in a little detecting no matter what!
I began my day on an empty stomach... *sigh* I had a doctor's appointment and I had fasted to facilitate anticipated blood work that my doctor would order.. only he didn't order it this morning. <smile> Hey! I didn't get stuck! That was my first find for the day.. relief!
With my appointment out of the way I had to answer to my growling stomach..immediately! Fortunately there are numerous fast food offerrings near my doctor's office. With hunger pangs abated and list of neighborhood parks and schools in hand I set out on the first of my short hunts for the day. I had spent a little time the night before putting some of them in order of proximity.. Starting from my Doctor's office, which would be closest, then the next closest to that park, and then the next to that park... and so on. I also had to figure in some errand destinations as well. Anyway, I had my venues routed and planned. I knew I wouldn't be spending a great deal of time at any one location. Partly, because I had so many other duties for the day, and partly because everything is still pretty much frozen solid yet. Woodchips can be a b:tch to dig when they're frozen I'm discovering.
Pulling up to my first destination, as expected, I find the tot lot deserted. I couldn't say the same for the parking lot though. Seems I happened upon a rendezvous. Two cars, one empty, one running with two people inside.. at first I thought there was only one person, but then a second head popped up.. <rolling eyes and whistling non chalantly> Hmmmm.. 9:00 in the morning, a vacant parking lot at a neighborhood park? Yeah, it was a rendezvous. Bet both were married, just not to each other. ANYWAY... gearing up and taking to the woodchips, I began finding goodies right off the bat. Clad here clad there, pull tabs of course, lots of pennies. I guess my audience got nervous or were feeling guilty or something because the got in their respective cars and drove away. Oh well.. c'est la vie.
After sweeping the last of the woodchips at the first park, I got back in my car and drove a couple of miles to another neighborhood park and began sweeping the chips there. More clad, some odd scraps of metal, lots of can slaw. It was a small tot lot. On to the next place on my list.
Site number three was a bit bigger than the first two combined. And apparently it gets a lot more use.. or at least traffic. Lots of pull tabs, some clad, a spoon? One odd looking bit of metal.. didn't know exactly what it was at first but I thought it looked familiar.
After I got home and cleaned some stuff up I realized what it was. I'd seen the same item in several mail order catalogs, it's or WAS a brooch.. two playfull cats or kittens.. only my piece is missing both the heads, the pin on the back and the gemstones. <shrug>.
Site number four... another smallish neighborhood park.. more pull tabs, a bullet? A very small bullet, but it's still a bullet... though I don't think this one has been fired, no scoring or deformation.
Kind of made me nervous , this was a rougher part of town, and even though it was broad daylight I still felt a little uneasy detecting out of sight of the road and any would be watchfull neighborhood houses.. or the people in them anyway. <grin> Some clad was found, but I don't think I'll be revisiting that park anytime soon.
LUNCH TIME!!!! After dropping off some prescriptions at the pharmacy and some outgoing mail at the post office I took a few minutes to sit down in the warmth of a nearby Wendy's Burger joint and relax to the "classical music" being piped over the speakers to the customers. Go figure?<shrug>
After lunch, which was a bit late due to my running around earlier, I decided to hit a couple of the schoolyard playgrounds I had on my list. School was over for the day and the kiddies had all gone home. Schoolyard one was a few miles away on the other side of a fairly new housing community. The school itself is brand new (a couple of years) and the playground equipment is new as well.. LOTS OF WOODCHIPS.. or little islands of woodchips anyway. Lots of MUD between them. But at least the mud wasn't deep, only an inch or so.. still frozen under that. My first find at this school was some bling! two pieces actually, some SUGAR and some SPICE..
They're heavy, they're pretty large for zipper pulls so I'm thinking that they are probably costume jewelery. There are no marks on the backs so I doubt that they are really silver.. *sigh* that would have been nice. Oh well, I got the "sugar and spice" though. <grin> lots of clad at this school too. and a visit from Darth Vader perhaps... but he must have been TINY!
On to the final destination for the day.. daylight was running out and I was determined to get in one last little hunt before calling it a day. This school is not but a few miles from my own home, bringing me almost full circle in my journey for the day. More mud, but only between the woodchip islands. I did detect between the islands of course.. I knew some history about this school, while it's probably thirty years old or better, it was built on what was previously an old farm. The school was constructed not far from the old house site.. the tot lot, would be just about halfway between the old farm house and the road of the time..now a neighborhood street.
Yep.. found some relics.. but I'm not so sure that all of them are all that old. I'm guessing the remains of the cap gun could go back a few years..
and the brass and ceramic caster is definitely antique..
but the cable tie could be fairly recent.
<shrug>The Co2 cartridge is fairly recent, as are the batteries (Shazam & Sunbeam) ??
...and the coaxial cable end connector. All the clad was relatively recent. I found some wire hoops that I had a hard time eyeballing at first. My coil was having a fit over them, showing everything from a quarter to a nickel with every pass. Turns out that they are either copper or have a lot of copper in them..
...found five in all, scattered around the tot lot. Along with pencils and pull tabs.
Done for the day. Time to go home and spend some time with my better half. She had other plans though. Before I could even pull the first goodie from my finds pouch she had me back out the door and on our way to a local eatery for dinner. Seems she didn't want to cook dinner tonight anymore than I did. <grin> Oh well.. the tally would have to wait. Until now. All sorted, displayed, recorded and put away. Now I'm on here sharing it with all of you. It would sound like I spent all day detecting from reading my post here but I really didn't. Detecting was a secondary priority today, but one that I wasn't going to pass up.. and thanks to good planning and some juggling of time I managed to get several small hunts in while I went about my "duties" for the day. Not a waist of time at all. Of course, the cold weather and frozen ground kept my detecting detours short too.
Ahhhh.. tomorrow I'm OFF. If the weather is as nice as it was today, perhaps I'll get to do some serious detecting.. or at least spend more time at any given location. We shall see.
Here's the haul for today.. a LOT of junk, a fair amount of clad ($5.66) and a LOT of fun!
