Thanks to the crew in the What's It forum, I now know I found a gem!

Was hunting an old homesite in Hampshire County, WV, up on a ridge line overlooking Route 50. The little town in the valley was burned during the war and there was rumor of rifle pits up on this ridge below the house. So the expectation going in was perhaps a few dropped bullets.

This was dug just in the side yard of the house (1790). I knew it was a lock plate but I had never seen one like this before. I was able to clean it up with electrolysis and posted a few pics last night. Someone knew right away it was from a Sharps Carbine! Needless to say I am floored. Hope to get back there in the Spring and perhaps find the rest.

The pics are before and after a few hours of electrolysis. I will update with the final pics once the process is complete.
