Sharp Mountain cave tour, Pottsville PA 2 p.m. Saturday near The Pottsville Club

To celebrate the county's history, local hikers are planning a trek to a cave on Sharp Mountain that may have been used by some of the area's early inhabitants.

"It's a cave which was used by the Lenape people," Patrick M. "Porcupine Pat" McKinney, educational coordinator for the conservation district, said Monday of the Native American tribe.

Treacherous walking conditions cut short a hike to an Indian cave on Sharp Mountain, but about 60 people enjoyed time outside Saturday.

Patrick M. "Porcupine Pat" McKinney, environmental education coordinator for the Schuylkill Conservation District, led the group on the second walk of the season in conjunction with the county's bicentennial celebration. The walks are sponsored by Schuylkill On the Move.

McKinney told the group that gathered at 2 p.m. near The Pottsville Club that they would head out on an abbreviated version of the walk that was supposed to end at a cave used as shelter for American Indians of the Lenape tribe during hunting excursions in Schuylkill County.

The original 3-mile hike has been rescheduled for 2 p.m. March 26.​
