Hi all-
I stumbled across this blog and website while investigating rock formations and geology in general. What I found was a really excellent site packed with wonderful photographs and enough scientific information that you 'get' what's going on, but not so scientific that you need to learn a new language. Not only are the photos excellent at demonstrating various geologic phenomena, they're also quite artistic, and when she's not certain of an explanation, she admits it and offers sources for research. She's doing much of her work in the British Isles- but also along eastern Canada and northwestern U.S. I spent one entire snowy (desperate) afternoon going through her entire blog. You may find that this answers questions about the rocks and formations you see here in the U.S.
First the blog (today's post) then the website under that. She has a whole category called 'Rocks' so you don't need to get bogged down in things that don't interest you...
Hope you enjoy and maybe find it useful!
