Shadow Box with Indian War Cartridges

Over the several years I've hunted sites from the western Indian Wars era I've found thousands of cartridges; both rifle and pistol. Most are mangled, crushed, broken, split and just too ugly for anything but the scrap buckets. Occasionally though, I find some that are near perfect and this winter I put them randomly in a shadow box display. There are probably 8 or 9 different types if cartridges in the display. I like how it turned out and I'm going to make another one will some artillery fragments and friction fuses.

Have you ever found any guns ? Or other war type items ?

Interesting display. I’m curious what these crimp marks are from. It seems many of the cases have them near the head of the case.

I found a trigger guard from a rifled musket once, but that's the only gun piece I've found so far.

Those are centerfire cartridges with an internal primer....mostly of the Benet design. Back then the primer was inserted through the case mouth and the crimps held it in place. If you're interested Google Benet internal primers and there's more info about it.

You can usually hear the primer rattling around in the casing if you shake it.
