I found this machine deep in the woods in the dirt today. At first I though it was a car part, then I saw the wheel on the side and immediately knew that it was a sewing machine.I'm wondering how old it is and who made it.

Here are some pics.

This machine is all cast-iron and is very heavy. It's a shame someone would throw away a piece of history such as this :sad10:

Im not a true sowing machine expert but I have seen my share and have dug quite a few of them! Can you make out ANY company name on it? Most will have the company name like the one in the photo! I would place this sowing machine at about early 20th century! (1910-1930s) see if you can find any lettering or serial numbers there should be some on there you may need too look very closely! Even if you can only make out two or three lettering that should be enough to ID the manufacture!

Been to the Henry Ford museum a number of times - but that doesn't make me knowledgeable about anything!

Based on the construction of the one you found, I would say that one is from before the turn of the century.

The weird thing is is that there are two holes in the metal on one side like it slid into something. Could it have been part of a sewing machine table?

That sewing machine looks very similar in comparison to the one I found.

The construction of yours is def 1800's. my guess would be 1880's. here's another pic from 1880's. very sim to yours.

There are thousands of different styles from the late 19th too early 20th century that look like you're sewing machine! Research the history of the sewing machine that may help you ID it better.

A clue that will help you age old sewing machines is if it has a lever which enables the machine to back stitch as well as a screw for adjusting stitch length. The earlier machines didn't have those features and the work had to be turned in order to finish the seam.

Another tip for dating; is the long bobbin. That style of bobbin was discontinued (at least by Singer) in the late 19th century.

Thanks guys for the great dating tips for the machine! Thanks to your great info. I have figured out the time period from which this was made in!

Be sure to check out my latest post on the stoveware I found yesterday! would really appreciate it if you could spread a little light on what type of stove this came from and how to clean of the cast-iron.

its from the mid to late 1880s most likely because of the long bobbin at the top. Knowing that it was made in the 19th century is good enough for me! :happy3:
