William III Sixpence (Chester) - Multiple Counter-Stamps

A shame that the Hod Hill Brooch is broken to death. Did you ever get a (almost) complete one? The counter stamped Sixpence is interesting. Did you know why it was counterstamped so often?

I think I have a couple of near complete ones without their pins.

From what I gather for blank silver coins to circulate they had to be sure it was silver, so silversmiths would test & stamp them. So this suggests that several silversmiths tested it.

Ok, makes sense. Was there a shortage of silver coins at that time? Or was that the time billon coins came into circulation?

By the time a 1690s Sixpence was near blank is hard to judge & without IDing the silversmith marks, I'm not sure. But I can only assume they were short of silver.

I didn't know blank silver coins were out there...thanks as always for sharing your digs :)
Here are the near blank counter-stamped versions I have, had loads more that are not stamped.

As always, the most amazing finds!

I see your still out there kicking butt ! Awesome finds! Well done

Very cool Cru'
Are museums interested in these at all...the marks are unique?
I've yet to find any experts in these. I have contacts for many specialisms but not found one for counter-stamps yet...
Which means I'm not aware of any Museums that focus on them. (A little modern for most)

Very nice variety of finds!!! A William III silver anything is at the top of my list, actually any colonial British silver is. Tough find over here

Love the counter stamped silver, it has a lot of character. :occasion14:
Managed to get a doubled sided one once.

Actually, most if not all silver ones are stamped on both sides.

Something I wasn't aware of Cru, thanks.
The coppers I have are only on one side I think off the top of my head.
Wonder why that would be?

Yes, I've noticed that. Most coppers are only stamped 1 side.
I'm not sure why but guessing because its a precious metal.

Cru...Just Always Top Shelf finds.I wish some of that lost history was over here
