Whilst studying an old map of the confederate fortifications in Columbus, and comparing it to the modern satellite images on Google Earth, I noticed that a few smaller fortifications aren't part of the state park.
I have a hunch that these sites may be almost untouched, due to potential hunters assuming everything is covered by the park. The town is surrounded by lots of farmland, which hopefully means private property.
The map also shows a portion of the M&O railroad where goods were taken from the river and transported inland, which I can't seem to find on Google Earth. Finding where those tracks ran would be the key to some very promising sites, three more fortification sites, as well as a confederate magazine.
Anyone up for a road trip? I'm inexperienced in detecting, and lack any good MDing equipment. I'd greatly appreciate anyone willing to let me accompany them on a hunt at these sites, or provide any further information to help pinpoint those old tracks.
