I unexpectedly set a personal record today.

What pesonal record did I break:
Largest volume of coins picked up from one bank (either by weight or total # of coins).

I stopped by a bank that I occasionally stop at that lets me buy bags off their coin machine. Turns out the local school had a penny drive so the bank had $750 dollars of pennies. I bought them all. Needed to take three little dolly trips to the car to get them all....

15 - $50 bags of pennies
1 - $100 bag of nickels

I could have grabbed a bag of quarters too, but I figured I would be busy for a while already so I skipped it.

Total coins = 77,000 coins
Total weight = If I assume that 20% of the pennies are copper, I think the weight is around 450 lbs.

(the rear end was practically dragging on the way home... ;D )

Now I am just hoping that they weren't presearched..... :P

I'll post results here later.

Whoa! Looks like you did your weight lifting today. Can't wait for the results. My guess is 325 wheats from the whole batch and your first IHC of '08...Good luck!

I hope Immy's right. But my guess is 140 wheaties. And 2 war nickels.

Hears hoping for much more.

Happy hunting

Hugh

I'm guessing MUCH later. You have LOTS of work to do. :-)

I was picking up 10 boxes (Not bags) of pennies per week from one bank, and 4 boxes from three other banks. That's 22 boxes per week. 55,000 coins per week. And it got to where I was behind, and had to have the banks take a respite. To work off the excess sitting in my office. 77,000. Wow. That's gona take some time!

Good luck on it. :-)

My guess based upon 2008's finds was about 225 wheats (15 bags with 15 each).

Well did about 20% of the pennies (3 bags) and the bag of nickels so far

The nickels were nothing special.

Argh!! Those 1945-D's are making me drool, I still haven't found one yet this year.

Looks like your wheat estimate will be closer than mine GMan. The Canadian total looks closer to fulfilling my 325 guess.

I've only gotten one wheat this year so far, and it was a '45D. ;D 'Course, only did one bag, too. :P

Great score so far Gman, keep us posted. You've always been the hardest core CRHer of the bunch.

1 penny counterpunched with JFK

Final totals for 75,000 pennies searched this weekend = 240 wheat pennies (29 were pre-1941)

Now I just have to figure out how to cash the rejects all in. :P

Now, to dump!
That's a lot of coins, GMan!
I see you average about 1 wheat per 313.
My bags are about 1 per 500.

Whew, you breezed thru those like nothin', GMan! 75,000 coins in about 30 hours averages $25, or half a bag, an hour. And since you slept, ate and spent time with your family it means your per-hour average was higher than that. You're an inspiration to us all! Congrats on all the goodies!

Using my current method I can do a $50 bag of pennies in just over 30 minutes including updating my spreadsheets.

I just pick out the wheaties, Canadian, foreign, proofs, and some lower mintage memorials (if I see them).

I read any date that is obverse side up and otherwise just pick out any non-memorials.

I don't have as much time as I had last year to look for errors (at least not right now) so I cut back on the error search and dramatcially improved the throughput.

All told the 15 bags of pennies took about 8 to 8.5 hours to go through (by hand).

Basically there are only 2 downfalls of this method:
1) I have only a 50% chance of seeing a 1960 small date or a 1970-S small date if I there was one in the bag.
2) I will miss all but the most obvious errors.

Yeah, that's how I do it in the casino. I'd love to add to the counterpunch penny thread but unless I happen to notice it, it'll get overlooked. Proofs still stand out, as do foreigns (by sound alone) but doubled dies, small dates, etc. fly under the radar. Too bad, cuz I'd really like to find an 83 RDD someday.

Speaking of searching, I never noticed it before, but wheats seem to make a slightly different sound as they plunk out of the machine. Even different from other 95% coppers but not as noticeable as Canadians. Having tuned my ear to the sound coins make as they hit each other (even with the ambient casino noise) wheats seem to have a deeper resonance. I keep meaning to try this at home but I forget.

WOW!

I'd like to see a short clip of you sorting. At most I search 2 penny bags over a weekend. But I'm looking a bit closer for errors and such.

I used to search for errors and such too, but between my job switch near the end of last year (which keeps me busier) and training to run my first marathon this summer, I just don't have time right now for the error search part.
