Went out for 4.5 hours today to an old farm that I've been going to for the last 3 months. Still have plenty of acreage to hit. Found .$92 in modern clad which is a pretty slow day for this place. Then I got into a small area about 6 ft. by 6 ft. and started hitting buttons. I found 8 in that little area alone. Very strange. I believe that some of them are fairly old (the site dates to the early 1920s) because of how badly the backs are corroded and the shanks on a couple of them.
the button in the middle has some writing on it. 'ALFRED NELSON Co. NY'. I've googled that name and can't find anything about a company named ALFRED NELSON. I've posted this button in the What is It forum. Hopefully we've got some button collectors in the forum.
Also found an aqua blue earring (vintage 1980s), a dog tag that says RAINY and includes a phone number. I called the number to try and return it, but it's disconnected. It's a neat looking dog tag, as it's started to get some toning on in it from being in the ground. Also found a Chuck E. Cheese toekn from 2000.
This is probably the last MD for me for a little while, the wife is due with our 4th child any day now!!!

Hey, AZ—

I posted some information on your Alfred Nelson button in "What Is It?"

The two largest buttons in the top photo are classic "blazer" buttons— thin, die-stamped brass, with steel/tin back (often badly rusted or missing on dug ones); heraldic crest and Latin or pseudo-Latin motto; probably post-1950.

Congrats on the new addition to your family!

All the best,
PBK

Aweome information on the buttons PBK. I was hoping you were reading my post...
Can you send me a link to the information about the other buttons. I'll look in the What is it forum for the other button.
What's interesting PBK is that the button with the latin on it rang up very low VDI on the MXT (+10 - +12), while the others were in the +20s and 30s and even 40s. So I'm cleaning it thinking it might be gold plated? Did they even do that?

Actually, many blazer buttons are gilt— some of the older &/or better quality ones, fairly heavily.

BTW, other blazer buttons often imitate the designs of 16th-18th century European coins, or ancient Greek and Roman coins. Sooner or later, you'll probably find a few of those, too.

Unfortunately, much of the best information about buttons can only be found in books or catalogs. However, you might find these links pages worth a look:
