i was recently gifted a collection of semi-precious stones (large quartzes, etc) from a friend who passed away. some are obvious (quartz, ruby in Zoisite), but some are not. the first piece i wanted help ID-ing is a cut wand point, about 5 inches long, translucent green-blue-green with quite a few fracture patterns/cleavage points. it has some iridescence flash as well. it's obviously not labradorite, but i'm wondering if it's aventurine (looks too clear, to me) or Chrysoprase, or if anyone has another guess.

any chance its an aqua marine crystal?I understand they can lean greenish

i suppose it's possible, but if it is aquamarine, it'd be fairly valuable; i've never seen aquamarine this dark. i'll check out some stats on it, though. the cleavage pattern on teh stone you posted looks different.

i also finally got the nerve to try scratching it with quartz (Mohs 7) and it left a noticeable scratch, so i don't think it's a beryl (aquamarine being one). i would have thought maybe fluorite if it didn't have some rounded fracturing. it's also relatively heavy. :/

what makes you think so? only a few of the fracture planes flash a color, and the color is overall not nearly as dark as all the other labradorite i've seen. that was actually one choice i'd ruled out completely.

FLORITE !... Final Answer :P ....... It is a healing stone... in "wand" shape.

I'm with ARRC on this and your item is a completely lapidary fabricated rock mineral made from a larger piece. It's not a naturally formed crystal.

oh, i knew it wasn't a natural crystal; it's a carved piece, definitely. or are you thinking it's some sort of composite?

i thought fluorite myself was a possibility (moreso when quartz scratched it) but it isn't purely tetrahedral in fracture/structure pattern, so i wasn't sure. it also seems pretty heavy to be fluorite. :/

ahhhhhhhh! ok, after checking a bunch more fluorite pictures, i think i'm going to mark this solved, especially since i myself suspected it might be fluorite. if i get the gumption, i'll try scratching it with a Mohs #5 and/or seeing if i can find a UV light to test it. but it looks pretty similar to other wand pictures i've seen (like the ones ARRC posted), including some with fracturing very similar to my piece. and apparently the wand shape is a popular cut!

thanks for the pics, ARRC!

Honestly I don't see it as anything, but Fluorite from the picture of it, but I could be wrong. Fluorite | Gemstone Buzz

the only thing this is, is fluorite, there is no debate.

Does it glow under UV light? I think fluorite glows under UV light. You can get UV lights for about $3-4 on Ebay .
