Where did you find it? A sapphire or corundum is barrel shaped and very hard, right under diamond. Also , is it transparent or translusent.? I also go gem hunting, a rockhound as well as treasurehunter

Chemical Formula Al2O3 Hardness 9
Specific Gravity 3.9 - 4.1 Refractive Index 1.76 - 1.77
Sapphire is one of the two varieties of Corundum, the other variety being Ruby. Sapphire includes all colors of Corundum except for red stones, which are referred to as Ruby. Sapphire is the most highly valued of the blue gemstones.

The most expensive Gem Stone in the world is a Pigeon Blood Ruby. It will sell for more than 5 times what a flawless diamond will sell for.
The so called Pigeon Blood Rubies you see advertised are NOT true Pigeon Blood Rubies.
There is a saying in the Far East "To ask to see a Pigeon Blood Ruby is like asking to see the face of God".

First off,
Check with your local gem and mineral clubs.
Find out who the local gem cutters are. They will know. Let the gem cutters tell you what it is worth and why.

They can also give you other out of area connections that will connect you with other possible buyers if it realy does have value. Or for further evaluation.

After it has been valued, if you don't sell on the spot.
You may get some interest on Ebay.

Just a place to start,
