I purchased these at a Indian artifact show several weeks ago in Springfield IL.
I'd never seen anything like them.
I did some internet research when I got home, but couldn't find any chain link examples like these. Most of what I found were replicas or fakes made to look old, for $9-$150. Nothing I could find that appeared to look authentic were like this pair. I'm seeking proof that wrist cuffs that looked like this actually were being used during the Civil War era.
There was information on the back of the walnut show case stating that a negro (slave) Confederate Soldier had been transported in these cuffs during the Civil War.
I have already established that there were several "John Crowe's ( slaves) from Alabama that fought in the Civil War for the Confederacy. However beyond there name there is no information.
Before I try to dig any further into the John Crowe history I would like to verify the historicity of the cuffs or not.
Thanks much for any help! Mark, You might contact Yossie, one of the more prominent handcuff collectors. [email protected] Sub 8-)

Thanks a bunch, I really appreciate the info.
I've already left information and pics. at yossie's web site.
I also found the same or very similar shackles made by Darby while looking through "yossie's site.
At least from what I've
found out so far, I know that they "could" be Civil War period shackles.
If I learn more (good or bad) I'll post it.
Thanks again!

I am hoping yours are the real deal, and not one of the many fakes out there. Contacting Yossie is a good idea.

Thanks for the screenshot, I couldn't find a picture that close to what I purchased.
I also appreciate your well wishes. But even if these turn out to be reproductions I won't be all that disappointed. The gentleman I purchased them from is a well respected Indian Artifact collector and author of The Keokuk Axe book. Also the "$450 firm" wasn't so firm. I asked what he'd take for the shackles and nice Mill Creek chert hoe ( somewhat rare Indian artifact) he had marked at $400. He said he'd take $700 for both, and I said deal!
Here's the kicker, a guy walks up and wants to buy the the shackles while I'm counting out $20's for the purchase. Bruce Filibrandt tells the fella. I just sold them. The guy inquiring, I find out is the Sheriff of Terre. Haute Indiana. Twice he came up to me at the Artifact Show and asked if I had any buyers remorse, he was willing to buy the shackles from me for the asking price.

If those are real, then they are one of the coolest artifacts I've seen. Very different. Hoping that you do find that they are authentic...

I was certainly intrigued myself, I read a lot of history, including Civil War history and if I've ever seen shackles like those I've forgotten!

I saw some Darby shackles on his site, but I didn't see any like yours. Can you post a screen shot of them or post a link? Thanks.

Sure, there was a similar (but not exactly the same) set under the heading "finish" in Yossie's collection. See pic. below with Houdini poster beside it ( written text illegible). And the one your referring to found under the site heading "list" and was pictured in one the "collectors" sites that were listed alphabetically, see that pic. listed below.ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1502764563.903633.jpgImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1502764587.390974.jpg
