Hi all,

Still awaiting my rock identification book and in the meantime I am very curious as to what type of rock this is? I have found a lot in gray and brown (the brown is pictured) and 1 that is reddish. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Pictures are same rock front and back sides. Thanks in advance!!!

It might help to know what state it was found in. Just looking at the pictures, it looks like a piece of chert nodule.

Also, thank you flinthunter. I couldn't find any pics online exactly like mine, but saw some similar to chert and was leaning that way too.

Looks like stuff around a lake near a college town but I’m not sure if we are being intentionally vague. I’d say chert nodule too.

Hi Older the Better... Flinthunter asked what state it was found in so I responded and added in it was found near a lake as to see if that helped with the identification at all. Not being vague, just answering what was asked, so I guess I'm sorry if that upset you for some reason? Thank you for the second assertion that it is chert though.

Not upset haha I didn’t know if you had reasons for your privacy but there’s rocks like that up around Clinton lake I’ve picked up a handful myself that have those nice bands and bullseye patterns

Gotta remember that sometimes context doesn,t always come through as meant in online comms.
