just out of curiosity, is there something that can actually see coins, and pop tops, tab, etc in the ground on a small screen while you drag some sort of coil over the area...I know they have some called GPR, but im not sure if that is what it does...Seems like an interesting concept, but im sure there is more to it than I think...If there is such a thing, do you actually see the shape of small objects such as a coin???? Thanks for any input, Tom

This whole idea was given a large story in a detectin' magazine back in the early 90's. The article had a bunch of photos "seeing" underground. Hell, you could even just about see the date on the Mercury dime! I read the article with breathless anticipation of this new technology, wondering what would happen to our hobby if only those with 10K to throw around could afford it...Anyhow, it happened to be in the April issue, and at the very end of the article it said APRIL FOOL'S!

I don't think such technology exists. If it did, would we all still be using the machines we're using now???

Regards,

Buckleboy

I was'nt sure if it was just a cost thing, cuz 10 grand would keep me out of that game for a lifetime, but if you can xray pipe, and other similar technologys, someone has to be working on it..Military maybe, or not...i was just wondering.....Heck im using an Ace 250, cuz that is all i can afford..lol......I bet there are some pretty hi tech gadgets out there, that we dont know about yet...Thanks, Tom

well they have what is called a deep scan pusle you can scan under the surface it then downloads 3d image on your computer some go to 50 feet-n-some go to 100 feet but to cost is high.the one that scans to 50 foot runs a little over 4 thousand..

I have seen that, but is'nt it for locating caves, and such...I was just thinking there might be something that was able to penetrate soil, and see metal "shapes"....I would have thought at our present level of technology you could see the denser metal objects (shape only) thru the less dense soil, but maybe not....I was guessing the military might be onto that for mine detection....Thanks for the reply, Tom

I think this Garret is about as close as it gets to what you're talking about.

View Garrett GTI 2500 Specifications & Order

NEW EXTENDED 5 YEAR WARRANTY! Valid on all GTI 2500's purchased in 2004, in recognition of Garrett's 40th Anniversary!

What you "see" is what you get.

Most metal detectors can only determine a target's depth (if it's a coin) and the kind of metal its made of. However, the GTI goes a step further and also reveals the target's true size and true depth (no matter what the target is) via a unique, user-friendly graphic Imaging™ display.

Treasure Vision, simultaneously shows you the size and depth of the target and whether it is a coin, pulltab, bottlecap, drink can or large cache-sized object via simple-to-use color graphics. Find treasure at greater depths with the optional 12.5-inch imaging search coil.

Kas,
hey thanks for the reply, but I was not really talking about metal detectors per say.....I was wondering what other kinds of technology are out there...Not that I could afford it, but I am just curious...Tom

the deep scan pulse coils are used for metal objects.try kellycompany they sell metal detectors along with a couple of buisniess that carry what your looking for...they start at around 4 grand and go up to over 25 grand...and more..just look for the section that says deep pulse..on there web page..

HI: I am a cache hunter. I often wonder, who is actually going to dig over 6 ft in any event? Any of the two box machines and some of standard ones with the larger coils will pick up 5 gallon can at this depth.

So why this preoccupation wth 40 - 100 ft capabilites?

As for the orig idea in this thread, yes the mil does have that basic ability. They now have devices that use multiple wave lengths to penetrate and give a 3-d effect.

Simply look at the new airport security scanner which effectively rermoves clothing from the scanned person's body effectively leaving them nude on the monitor.

It's ethical use is being fiercely debated right now.

For a time one was put out that gave a monitor type of view but it was too expensive and incapable of field use, unstable and too delicate..

really i think you need to read his orginal post since he was asking about a coil that can scan under the surfuce and be able to show an image of the metal object under the coil.what is your precopution of a two box machine which has nothing too do with his frist post since a two box machine can-not scan under the suface and be able to show a metal object underground..thus is my post about a deep scan pulse coil or in ground poles that are able to detect metal objects then scan and download the image onto a screen.....

Hi Skull:

A two box machine is just the same as a standard detector, a modified TR. without the frills. Practially the same aux readout systems are available right now. They work by amplifying and defining the audio output, "regardless of the type of detector".

I believe that I am right on in this the thread and answering his questin.

Yes I was thinking more along the line of some type of x-ray machine that shows the shape (outline) of dense objects.........You would look at a video monitor as the coil, or whatever the head unit would be, you would see real time images...Like I said I know there is something called "Ground Penetrating Radar" But I dont know what the resolution is..Could you see a coin? I can see how soil conditions would affect viewing, but I think most metal are denser than soil, and even alot of different kinds of rock...Tom

8) The technology exists but the detector doesn't (yet) as far as I know. I was in the military for 21 years and just recently retired. We had "Stuff" that could "see" objects and "hear" objects as far as 100 nautical miles away and identify them instantly. We also had this new vision equipment that did not use any type of lens or scope. It was 100% digital and could "see" under any condition (in the ground, water, air, etc) and it displayed the image on a monitor. It was like looking through a pair of binoculars but with the "animated game" effect. So...does anything exist that can see into the ground and show you what it is? I am sure it exists but not for us "civies". As for the airport scanner that "sees" everything you are actually going through a transmitter and a receiver which is why that works, same as an x-ray machine in the airport or x-rays of your body in the docs office. You are between the transmitter and the receiver or transmitter and receiving x-ray plate. What we need is something like a Tri-Corder on Star Trek. ::)
