Hunting my mother's farm in Maine. Yesterday, I found an 1838 large cent on a quick 20 minute hunt before dark. Today, I went out at the crack of dawn. My game plan is to start close to the house. Two large lawns and a very large barn. Then I plan to work my way back in time through the fields. I figured I would be up to my neck in some clad and possibly silver as the house dates to 1909. Nothing. My second coin of note found on this trip was another large cent. Pretty toasted but it is sitting in olive oil right now.

Also, got a hit that I thought was going to be a zincoln but it turned out to be this crotal bell, completely intact.

Tomorrow I think the good stuff will start to come out of the ground and I head to the fields where old homes used to be.

I also found three horse shoes and a large file. All modern.

So for those keeping track... TAM's metal detecting history - Large Cents: 3 - Wheaties:1

Thanks for looking and happy hunting!

Congrats on the LCs and that sweet bell. GL on the continuing search.

Great looking bell:occasion14:

Thanks!

I have about 50 more acres to search this week, so here's hoping!

Nice old copper and very nice details on the bell!
It must sound great!

There is something special, about old bells. There sounds can trigger the feel of old times.
Ring, ring, ahhh.... I can picture the old sleigh, or the animals grazing pasture on a sunny day. Hopefully you can imagine too!

Nice, I love seeing big coppers pop out of the ground. That crotal bell looks awesome too, I am annoyed I have still not found one :laughing7:

That bell is one of the nicer ones...older too!

How can you tell? Bells aren't really my area of expertise. Any reference guide I should be looking up?

Very nice bell . I would trade the 20 wheats I dug last week to dig just one bell

that bells a beauty!, nice copper too!

That's more specifically known as a "petal bell" and is one of the more elegant varieties of crotal bells. Other than the size (#2) specification, is there any more text on it?

Awesome bell and any old copper is always a good find!!

I found a Crotal bell myself yesterday, not near as nice as yours though.

Congrats and a good hunt and Good Luck with the rest of that property!!

Not that I see. I actually thought the 2 was the hallmark so it's neat that to know that is the size.
