Second large cent 1797 Draped Bust

Well I got permission to dig a friend of mine's property today. The house was built in 1776 and is in the historic district of my town. It's a large house beautifully restored and probably about 7 to 8000 square-foot inside. The first hole I dug was a modern clad dime and then 3 feet away from that hole came this large cent. This is my second large sent I've ever found, the first was the Fugio that I dug in my front yard two months ago the day after receiving my first metal detector. I'm curious what others opinions are with regard to cleaning all copper coins. It seems that after using water it got rougher in texture. In the future should I use a dry toothbrush or just leave it alone? IMG_2977.JPG

The date shown in my title is incorrect. I tried editing but it hasn't changed. The date of the coin is 1797

Haha, I like how a Fugio was your first large copper! I've likely dug 300-350 large coppers and never found a Fugio. Lol.

Nice score with the Draped bust Cent

Yeah that was a bit crazy. I posted it on the site back in April. There were a lot of comments about setting the bar too high with my first find. The day I found it was only my second day metal detecting in my life. I didn't know what I had until I asked an expert friend of mine. I thought it was a token

So you have found 2 coppers, 1 being a Fugio, and the other a 1700's US cent? That just isn't fair.. Nice score!

It has to be the proverbial beginners luck. They were more targets at the house but they were in thin areas of grass and I didn't want to upset the guy. I had to stay at the back of the house so I know there's more treasure around

Congrats on the large cent and being that old! I would be careful as far as further cleaning as you might clean further details off and would be best to check with someone who has more experience with cleaning these coins and the hazards of too much cleaning. Enjoy your finds!:icon_thumright:

Great way to start. Like Scrappy, I've never found a Fugio either, despite a lot of coppers being recovered. Closest I've ever come was seeing a buddy dig one. He was new to the hobby as well. At least I was able to ID it in the field for him. Keep hunting that yard. Sounds promising.
