Second Fossil ID (iD'D by ajpaulison Thanks aj! It is a partial Shark Vertebrae)

I did so well getting help on my first fossil, I thought I would try this one which was found the same day as the first on with the Stingray mouth plate.

This fossil looks a lot like a section of a tree with rings. If it were completely round, it would be about the circumference of a half dollar. It has some rings showing but also has what appears to be lines running from the center to the outer edge like a sun ray pattern. I thought at first maybe it was petrified wood but since there is no samples of that in our area, I am pretty convinced it is a marine type fossil from the Miocene period like all the others in our area here in Central Florida. Any help IDing it would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Second Fossil ID (I know, but I am new at this)

My best guess would be a fossilized clam shell? Monty

Thanks Monty. I hadn't thought of that. I am going to go ahead and probably invest in a book to help me ID things if such a book exists. May as well spend some more money on another hobby.

Take care,

Jim

Neat find. What size is it? Would it be possible to post a picture with the wider end facing us?

Re: Second Fossil ID (I know, but I am new at this)

It could be a broken piece of a fossilized shark vertebrae. It looks like some kind of vertebrae fragment. Do both sides have the same rings? Are there any holes on the outer curved edge? Does it get thinner as it gets closer to what would be the center if it were completely round? Here's a link with a few photos.
