I got out for a bit this morning and found the usual stuff. Another Mercury Dime, a toasted Indian Head Cent, a button and some type of bronze dog, possibly a chess piece and yet another copper! No colonial gold this time, but it was nice to get out!

This copper has a tiny bit of detail, but I am stumped with the ID.

Anyone have a clue?

I don't know if the dog is dropping a deuce, looks more like he is pooping to me.

Strange Neil. At first it appeared bust was facing right. The more I look, it appears facing left. You can see better than me. Also looks like mis-spacing of the "III" which says CFT KGIII. But bust should face right. :dontknow: :help: NICE FIND!

The same thing happened to me. I was thinking Geo II, which faces left, and then I thought it is facing right.

And yes I thought the same thing about the dog too!

Re: Second Colonial Copper in Three Days!

It's facing correct for George II, but doesn't look like a George II bust (British or Irish) so either a counterfeit or something else. Without any more clues I don't think your chances are good at ID'ing it. Can you see anything on the other side at all?

Re: Second Colonial Copper in Three Days!

Neil, anyway you can darken the backround, and or, clean the coin slightly more? At this point you're not going to hurt it any. Adarker backround highlights detail.

I see what you're saying, but the chin and neck line look right for George II. The condition issues could very well be the reason it doesn't look like George II. Sometimes it can play tricks on you.

Re: Second Colonial Copper in Three Days!

Great finds congrats.

Re: Second Colonial Copper in Three Days!

Awesome finds, the dog is cool.

Re: Second Colonial Copper in Three Days!

Additional cleaning on a mineralized coin is pointless, but I put some petroleum jelly on it and got a good angle.

I think I have a positive ID. It is a KGII style of 1753.

Let me know if you all agree.

I think it's a better match for the young bust. 1733 maybe?

You are quite possibly right. In any case, it is most likely counterfeit, weighing 125 gr. Which is well below the accepted range of 145.0 - 163.9 gr. Someone else raised the possibility of a CT Copper, but I think it is more likely a KG II.

That's not part of the VS I see on the bust side. Would eliminate a CT.... Looks like young Brit. Geo. to me.

Great finds Neil! Quick question for you! I just ordered me the Spectra V3 a couple of days ago, upgraded from my DFX. How do you like yours?

Since this is not the White's forum I can be honest here. :laughing7: I replaced my DFX with the V3 back in October, not because I really wanted to, but I was able to pick up a two week old V3 for an unbelievable price and make a profit by selling my three year old DFX. ;D

I loved the DFX and always got great depth with it. some coins were more that 14 inches deep. To be honest, I have not dug any that deep with the V3 yet. I is most likely that I have not come across them yet. The V3 is a detector that is very hot right out of the box. Unlike most detectors, you will more likely need to lower sensitivities than raise them like other new detectors.

One thing I liked about the DFX was that it was very sensitive to small items such as cuff buttons. The V3 seems to be even more sensitive to these targets.

The V3 is like a wild stallion. It needs to be tamed.

I have found silver or old copper on every single outing to date with the V3.

I have been having some EMI problems with the V3 on my last two outings, but I was with someone using an Etrac which caused interference on one, and near some power lines today. It may also be a bad 950 coil (my coil of choice for my area). I will check it out in a quieter park tomorrow.

My question to you is why trade in the DFX? Are you unhappy with it?

Wow! your really doin well! keep em comin man!

nice stuff! still in awe of that gold piece on last hunt! great job man!

No, I am like you I love my DFX and I am probably crazy to upgrade right now to the V3 since I am just starting to get the hang of my DFX. I guess I did it because I like to have all the latest and greatest technology. I know that's not a good reason to switch from my DFX. I what to thank you for taking the time to respond back to me. I knew you had the DFX before and you always post some wonderful finds and I just wanted an experts option. Thanks again!!!!
