well since i dont live close to water i have to make the most of travel opportunities to try it. the pirate and i try another michigan statepark. my second attempt.this time i finally score in a very limited fashion.bay city st pk .this is the lake erie side much dirtier than the lake mich side.about 6 different bottom conditions to deal with here.a. slick residue first 3 yds from shore b. mudbottom w heavy weeds c.sand bottom w light mud coating. d. all sand but sink in.e firm sandbar. f.very deep sludge sink in 8 to 10 in. and combinations of the above.definately more than a newbie should have to contend with on only his second hunt.but, i am not about to be intimidated.no one else is in the water.so i first gotta see what is. yuck slicky scum and squishy mud.a fellow i asked said there is sand further out.at this point im not too sure about being in the water at all.finally found a firm sand area. turn on machine set and a signal.trembling with joy over a clad dime.my first water find of any value. so im wondering if this place may be real good.im already 10 cents up on my first hunt where i found nothing good in the water. 5 minutes later a real low signal that gets louder as i dig it.a clad quarter down pretty deep.i am finding water targets !!! i wish i could say it was all coins a jewelry from there but no. i managed 3 pennies spaced between trash targets for the next 100 minutes.so 38 cents total.an intersting trash target was a very large gear of about 20 lbs weight.it either hasnt been there long,is stainless or perhaps brass.becuz it is not rusted.i am out in the water because after reading and reading it just becomes apparent thats the place to be for best finds on a continuing basis. the travelling hunter is on a tough mission however as he keeps moving.i am at the state areas as i know they are open and a good place to learn.as im traveling i cant take the time required to find out the rules at the city or county beaches.there very few people at the state park.i would guess anyone local knows of places to beach and swim that are free or at least lower than the state park charges.thats prob the hotter spots.maybe also small inland lakes where the water is cleaner.anybody from this area who might have mercy on me and tell of a decent or better place to try would be greatly appreciated.headed further north.

Congrats on a good hunt, glad you enjoyed it. That gear sounds interesting, should get you soemthing from a salvage yard at least :). I personally can testify that the water is best for jewelry, but nto as good as the dry for coins. But for that you get fewer trash targets, and it is a bit harder to dig. Shame the bottom is so yucky tho, hope you can find some cleaner beaches to hunt.

Congrats again, and happy hunting!

Remember there has to be people in the water to lose the stuff. It sounds like no one would be swimming there and might be making a wish and throwing a few coins in the water. If it is not silver I would not waste your time at these places, unless you know it was a old swimming hole years ago.

Look for the crowds or do a little research on old swimming areas. The beaches with the crowds may have more folks hunting it but it stands to reason more people more lost treasure.

Water is the place to be your are on the right track, but just remember if there is no jewelry to pass your coil over you will not find any. Good luck

Your post is hard to read............

water hunting is a blast, I have really enjoyed myself this summer. Its a lot more challenging than I thought it would be thats for sure. You do need to find where the people are, also since this is a lake and the way you describe the bottom you did good with what you found. At a beach you have the tides and the sand shifting so that your finds are always covered and uncovered. At a lake you got things that go to the bottom and continue to get covered up deeper and deeper. The silt sounds like its pretty thick so you have to get past that to get to the hard packed clay, thats where the jewelry will be if there is any.
