What a beautiful weekend. I hunted ALL day BOTH days..and the finds were few and far between...but they did pop out.
I met up for the first time with Coin Magnet...Coin Magnet Jr....and a feller' who wishes to remain anonymous.
I met them at one of their parks....and it has been beat to death over the years just like any other place I frequent. I wouldn't have it any other way.
Coin Magnet pointed out to us where he had found different coins over the years. It was a park that has given up a lot of nice coins in a lot of different spots..so we just started pluggin' away. He told us most areas were hit and miss with fill dirt..so we just took our chances
Coin Magnet Jr. and I started in the most obvious spot of all...right amidst the old playground equipment. I didn't take 3 steps before hitting the first Injun. It was down 8" to 9"...and gave the classic injun tone hit and cursor dance.
I then took another 5 steps and got a decent but strange higher hit. I dug down about 7" and popped out the completely black Merc.
I completed the circle around the one piece of playground equipment..and at the last point...I got a warbly high pitched jumper. The sound was sweet..but strange...kind of like a "sick flute". The cursor was everywhere..and never locked in any one spot. Had I not just dug a merc...and deep injun within 15 feet..I might have walked away. I RE checked the target and got the same thing...but it wouldn't pinpoint like it should...and not only was the depth meter buried...it wasn't even registering. I dug a monster plug down about 10" then ran the probe...NOTHING. I then dug a second hole ajoining the first hole...and ran the probe again...BINGO. I got a nice hit at the bottom edge of the second hole...so I carefully picked at it with my fingers. Finally...there it was....from 10" down and almost straight on edge...out came the 1872 seated dime.
The rest of the day consisted of lots of detecting but not much more digging. I did manage another merc... one more injun...and a few wheaties.
Sunday morning rolled around..and I woke up ready to hit the same park again. It bugged me that I spent the last 2 hours of Saturday's hunt not finding much. I wanted to see if I could pull out a few more deepies...so off I went.
I started out in an area that I knew had some fill spots in it. I decided to grid it in 30 foot sections to see if I could tell where the old dirt was. My first pass provided me with my favorite dig of the day. I got a very iffy signal but it was deep and it had a narrow window that screamed silver...then nulled. From the other direction...it nulled...then screamed silver ...but again...a very short silver hit. I dug down about 9" and the probe now sang...but intermittent. I pinpointed with the probe and dug out a clod. Out popped a standing liberty quarter with an old rusty piece of iron right accross the reverse. You can still see the rusty stripe accross it...so I'll leave it there as a "battle scar". YES...again...I dug a dateless one.
About 20 feet away...I got a nice two merc pocket spill at 9"...so I was now on cruise control.
On the return pass of my first trip...I got a nice sterling necklace with a religous charm on it from 8" ....and also an injun from 9".
The next 2 hours were..... I dug nothing....and it seemed like I was getting into some fill dirt.
I then moved to a different little section of the park where I got a completely black Barber dime...little junk ring... a token...and two more wheaties in about an hour. The barber dime is soaking in some lemon juice so it's not in the pics. It looks exactly like the black merc...and it "ain't purty".
For the last 2 hours...I moved back over closer to the playground area I was at on Saturday. I didn't hunt the same area...but a little area close by. Talk about NO finds for a long stretch. I was getting ticked off...and hadn't even dug a coin the last hour...and it was now geting DARK. I was bound and determined to get one more coin before leaving...no matter what time it was. Finally about 20 minutes after it got dark...I got a very deep injun hit. From 9" down...out it came. I didn't know what it was because it was dark...so I headed for the car. Turned out to be an 1891 injun...and a nasty one...but at least I could now leave in peace because I found one last dig.
I ended up the weekend with 7 silver...some jewelry...some tokens...some injuns...and had a blast. The silver is as follows...1872 Seated dime... 1917D merc...1917S merc....1912 Barber dime...19?? SLQ...1939 merc...1944merc. injuns were...1888, 1891, 1898, 1899.
Thanks for viewing and good luck hunting. Enjoy it before the weather gets bad. I'll probably be blowing off work today to meet up with a couple fellers' to do some more hunting. It's just to nice to be stuck inside the YMCA today.
