Nice day today so I went back to the area that has produced four seated liberty halfs. Today didn't disappoint. Found an 1862 Seated half today so now it makes 5 (4 if I don't count the one that was baked in a fire). It was the only coin I found today. It wasn't a rock solid signal because of nearby junk but it was good enough to dig. About 6 inches deep beneath some roots. What's strange is that I've still found no other coins ... only seated halfs. :icon_scratch: I've found plenty of buttons, musket balls, square nails etc. in the area but not even a penny. Very Strange!! I'm not complaining though. There are still plenty of targets to check out and unfortunately still lots of poison oak. Included picture of the other stuff found today. Detected for about 2 1/2 hours. Sorry for the crappy quality of the pictures. I need a new camera!

I never found a seated half before running into this area which appears to be an old campsite with the usual assortment of rusted out cans and junk. I've found lots of musketballs in the area which prompted me to write this article on musket and minnie balls. Check it out if you're interested:

By the way, I'm using a Fisher Coinstrike with a DetectorPro probe. :)

you sure have a hot spot there for those halfs. keep up the great finds...Matt

Seriously , Plehbah's post is spot on - In those days a half dollar was real money - these being lost

in this kind of quantity in such a localised area screams cache - think about it ,the dates are all relatively

close , the denominations all being halves - these arent random single coin losses or pocket spills-

if they were ,the denominations would be all over the place , and more than likely smaller coins.

Grid the area , work it slowly , dig all - this could be stashed in some kind of decaying iron bucket

with all kinds of trashy sounding signals - you must dig every signal ! Banner ! Argentium.

from all the finds like buttons , spoons, small little sash buckle , theres part of an umbrella or parasol .i'd say iit looks like you found a picknic area or some kind of lovers spot on that hill from the victorian times (late 1800's) all those coins weren't found in the same hole right ? but in a relative small area ,yes. i've found a similar spot and there were pocket spills scattered over an area a couple of acres big but 90% of the time when you found a coin there was a few in a 6 inch area from when the gentleman and his girl would spread out a blanket to picknic or some romance those coins would spill out of the pants with very shallow pockets that were in style back then . i bet ya theres more . here's a picture of one of my best spills . Dan

I vote with the others that it's a possible cache.

I'm sorry that I didn't see your other posts about the other Seated coins that you found. (working too much) Is it possible that it is an old home site where you are hunting? If you have found 5 now, there should be more. With one burnt like that, it sounds like someone lost their home along time ago.

From what I've read on other posts here that square nails usually were used in houses of the past. So again the possibility of old home site.

I hope along with the others that it turns out to be a cache site.

Good luck.

HH

Really nice finds. I'd go over that area with a fine toothed bomb. Fingers crossed for cache.

I AGREE YOU HAVE FOUND A GREAT SITE. DIG EVERY SIGNAL.I HOPE YOU FIND A BUCKET OF HALFS.

Very strange. The same thing recently happened to me. Went to a site where a house had been torn down and removed from the lot. Almost within 5 minutes of being there I dug a Standing Liberty Quarter. I'm thinking jackpot right away, maybe a virgin site. Then over the next hour or so my buddy vanoldschool, his nephew and me found nothing but some trash. Not even any clad! It bugged me all week so I went back on friday and detected on the gravel driveway and pulled a merc and a silver rosie. Go figure. Very nice coins, a lot of us would be happy with just one of those babys. keep hunting that spot. You can bet I'll be back at mine this week.
